From Siena to...

Ciao tutti!

I study Italian, and in March I'm headed back to Italy (yay!) for an intensive 2-week course in Siena.

I have two questions.

1) What is the best way to get from Siena to Lucca? I'll be spending the weekend with my relatives there.

2) I will have only half-days in school, which gives me entire afternoons/evenings to have fun & explore. Any suggestions for places both in Siena and outside of Siena? Are there any nearby towns I can check out?

Grazie mille!

ciaociao
Tina

The best way would be rent-a-car but it's also the most expensive way! Well, train is best option (after car), it's cheap and there are several daily conection from Siena to Firenze and then to Lucca directlly (or with one more change in Prato).

Every town and village in Tuyscany is so special. In vivinity of Siena is famous Chianti wine region with fortifies villages, castles and great churches. Florence and Grosseto are easy reachable also.

Enjoy your stay in Italy!!!

You could add Pisa to the list, too. Maybe Bologna, if you want a longer day trip.

Thanks..

I'm wondering if it's easier for me to get to Lucca via Pisa... ?

P.S. Actually I have already spent a LOT of time in Bologna (I've done Italy 4 times)...but thanks for the suggestion!

Ciao Tina

Il mio sugerimento e di visitare incantevole Umbria (citta di Perugia si trova a soli 80 km da Siena). Oltre di Perugia a must see is Assisi, Gubbio, Spoleto, Orvieto, e una decina di piccoli vilaggi. Secondo me, Umbria e piu bella di Toscana.

If I were you I would worry more about how to get around in Siena. Do avoid any contact with the "Train Siena" Bus Office, the bus drivers are nice, but the staff in the office is absolutely useless and rude. (Although there is a sign outside the office saying "information" in English, people inside cannot speak English, and they might even mock your Italian.)

The first fun activity you can try is to find the tourist office, it's in Piazza del Campo, hiding between some cafes and souvenir shops.

Going to Lucca, you can take the train via Firenze. You can consider adding Pisa in, but Lucca itself is more interesting than Pisa, and going to these two places in one day is more than enough.
