Can anyone suggest anything to do/places to visit in Canada that would not be too far from the northern New Hampshire area? Thank you!

We travelled down TO New Hampshire from Montreal via northern Vermont - Burlington, Shirley, Charlotte, on through various places in the White Mountains to Milford NH.
We made a two night stop in Charlotte to see relatives, and another to spread the driving but I would have to raid my albums to tell you the name of the place.
This journey could be done in reverse and Montreal is certainly a place to see.

An Amtrak train used to run from Montreal to Jackson Junction in Vermont and that was how we crossed the border, then picked up a hire car in Burlington. However I am not sure that train service runs anymore.

Or for something different you could drive up through Maine to New brunswick and Pr. Edward Island. Depends how much time you have to spend on the trip and what transport you will use.

Judging by your picture you seem young so you'd probably want to go partying. Montreal is a great party town with lots of clubs to go to and its only about 3-4 hrs from New Hampshire.

First of all, you don't say if you require public transport or will have a car? Also you don't say if you want to go into Canada from somewhere in Northern N. H. Or going into N.H. from Canada ?

If driving a car, you can go from Montreal to Sherbrooke Quebec which is a City in what they call the "Eastern Townships" There are many small villages and towns where you can get the Flavor of French - Canadian Culture and most people speak French as their first language. From there you can find your way into N. N.H. or do the reverse.

If by train or Bus, maybe forget about Sherbrooke, and take Bus to Essex Jct Vermont and on to New Hampshire by bus. The train from Montreal via NW Vermont does not cross the border anymore. They have a bus from Montreal to St Albans, Vt, but that train goes to NY City, and not Northern N.H.

And to correct the memory of Ranger49, I think you mean Shelburne instead of "Shirley", and Essex Junction instead of "Jackson Junction" ? I have lived and travelled all over Vermont and have never heard of either of those places. However, there is a Village called Jacksonville in Southern Vermont, and maybe there is a section there called "Jackson Junction". My "home" town for 35 years was Cambridge Village, and there is Cambridge Junction, North Cambridge, and Jeffersonville, all in the same Town of Cambridge. Guess where the name came from originally ???

Jon - Thank you so much for the correction and for re-setting my faulty memory. As I wrote those names I had an uneasy feeling....

I can't think where Shirley came from -- and still have a relative in Shelburne.
Somehow Essex Junction got mudddled with a Jackson Crossing - must get out those old travel journals to discover wher that is - Pa or am I thinking of Washington Crossing?
Thanks any way and apologies for the confusion.

If you travel up to Bar Harbour Maine, you can catch the "Cat" to Southwestern Nova Scotia. Depending on your interests: The Grand hotel has an incredible dinner theatre, that's huge fun (yes for young people). there are some great beaches, all free. Good camping facilities if you're on a budget. Some nice B&Bs if you want to avoid hotel fares, but they only save a bit. Interesting walking trails, museums, shopping, etc. If you bring a car, or rent one here, you can travel further afield, if you want to spend more time. Halifax is a nice place, lots happening, day and night. Annapolis Vally--great history, incredible scenery, the Cabot Trail and Louisburg in Cape Breton, as well as a variety of ceilidhs (parties). If you want more detailed info, don't hesitate to ask.
