You are aware that it is a 14+ hours trip?

www.trenitalia.it is the website for the Italian trainschedule.

Start / Arrive
Lucca 18:31 /Viareggio 18:49
Viareggio 19:17 /Ventimiglia 23:15
Ventimiglia 23:31 /Nice Ville 00:21
Nice Ville 06:00 /Avignon 10:13

You can do it in 10h 51m, although other options take longer. It's because you have to change trains so many times.

I would be very tempted to break the journey with an overnight stop somewhere. Click 'details' for each train departure on the Trenitalia site: Genoa, Nice or Lyon are possibilities.

You could also try Lucca-> Pisa, Pisa->Nice, Nice->Avignon

Pisa-> Nice can be 6.25 hours or less, and it's one less change

Hello,
Are you using a car?
Instead of staying in Avignon consider a hotel in Bonneiux, which is on a top of a hill, overlooking a valley.
This place was used in a movie. The Marquis de Sade had a castle across the valley and they light it up at night. I dont remember the name, but it is one of two hotels. Cheaper, too.
Good luck,
Painterdave
