Glasgow quick highland tour
Posted: Wed August 13, 2008 07:09 AM UTC
is it possible for a 1-2 days tour in the famous highland? either guided service or by rail. it's our first trip to scotland, we are not self-driving or hiking, the only convenient transport we have is Britrail Pass. can you tell me which is the quickest way from one of the hub cities to the wildness and uniqueness? if the way is guided service, we hope it's not costing too much.. any suggestion and advice is appreciated. thanks.

you can go Glasgow to Mallaig on the train

www.nationalrail.co.uk - look at the journey planner

there are no changes but it takes 5+ hours

you will see some of the countryside on the way up there and i think yo uwill get a discount using the britrail pass -- if not there are advance tickets you maybe able to buy ( upto 6pm on the day prior to your journey usually )
once in Mallaig you can access a wealth of options regarding hte highlands areas - and if you want to stay in FOrt William my mother in law would recommend the Croit Anna Hotel ( owned by Alpha Travel Company) its nothing spectacular but she says its clean and the food is good and the staff are more than accommodating to guest needs
also try visit scotland.com ( i think ) for ideas
hope this gives you a starting point and that you enjoy your visit

Second doodybee. The "West Highland Line" (I think that's just the inofficial name) from Glasgow to Mallaig won't disappoint you.

I have walked the nearby West Highland Way twice, and Loch Lomond, Bridge of Orchy, Clen Coe are fantastic.

I think the train leaves Glasgow from Queen Street Station, not Glasgow Central.

with brit rail your desytinations should be thurso in far north and atrip to the Orkneys ,back down to Dingwall for the Kyle of Loch alsh {day on Skye or better still go to the lighthouse that is a hostel and see skye taking all the rain and you see the magnificent mountains of skye taking all the rain then back to aberdeen the most beautifull city in the country. rail passes have ltd times so i know y cant see every thing. But it is fun To TRY>
