Bratislava Worth a visit?
Posted: Wed August 13, 2008 02:13 AM UTC
I'll be in Vienna next month but then I noticed that Bratislava is just an hour away by train. Going through the city's VT travel guide, it seems there's not much to see and what can be seen are quite similar to some of Vienna's or Prague's. Even travel books do not seem to give much info or details. Yet I don't wish to be biased hence I'd like to get your opinions. So would those who've been to Vienna/Prague and Bratislava highly recommend to visit the latter? Would half a day be enough to go around? Thanks!

Yes it's worth a visit but the best way of getting there from Vienna is by twin city liner: http://www.twincityliner.com/english/index.shtml
Half a day is enough time as the city centre is quite small although you would probably need longer if you wanted to visit the castle . Have a look at :

After Vienna and Prague Bratislava would be anticlimactic, to be sure. The Old Town is quaint with life-sized statues of people in different poses and there are several good restaurants, and then there's the State Opera House and the the fort...that's about it. A half day would be just about right, IMO.

I first visited Bratislava in winter 1971 and spent most the day miserably waiting for the bus back to Vienna. It has definitely improved since then, and my subsequent visits have been more successful. It is a pleasant capital city but, as the others have said, it cannot rival Vienna or Prague. A day trip from Vienna will give you an impression of the place.

I agree that travel books don't have enough info about Bratislava. I'm hoping to go there next week :D and on doing my research, I found this link most helpful: http://www.bkis.sk/index.php?lang=en. I can let you know what I think of Bratislava (if I visit it, I'm going to Vienna (yay!)) week after next if you want.

Slovakia is a country well worth to visit, but it belongs to the countries which are NOT about the capital. There are some wonderful castles and smaller cities - but you need more extensive time. And of course the magnificent mountains.

i am an american living in bratislava and yes, a half day is plenty enough to visit here. Although the old town is very charming and quaint, the rest of the city is hideously ugly in that communist style of architecture. Getting here by train from vienna is very easy. If you need further tips on where to go/what to see/what to do, let me know, i'd be happy to help out! ciao mike
