The September dates won't be up yet, but won't be much different to any earlier date you choose (make sure it's the ame day as the one on which you want to travel).
Journey time is 1-2 hours, depending on train, standard second-class one-way fare 11.50 euro.
Trains run from 04:40 to 22:51, so you won't have any difficulty with a daytrip.
Venice is quite expensive in comparison with other Italian cities, but if you get away from the main touristy sights/areas you should be able to find places which serve good food at reasonable prices. Try looking in Canareggio, or Dorsoduro (around Campo S Margharita is good, near the university so lots of students eat there).
