Forum Question Posted By: Replies:
Versailles Versailles pass or museum pass? and where to buy
Posted: Thu August 7, 2008 11:43 PM UTC
we (2 adults + 15 yrs + 11yrs) plan to spend a whole day Sun Aug/24/08 in Versailles (have to go early to avoid the lineup then stay late for the musical water show).
There is a pkg for 25 Eu inc everything or should we buy 4 days museum pass (plan to go to Louvre on Wed) 45Eu which not cover the show (extra 10 Euro)& RER (12 Eu return?); if we use the Ver pgk then I can buy 2 days pass on Wed& Thur.
I think kids pay extra 10 Euro for the show. Is there any kids fare for RER?

Another question: where do I buy the pass? if I have the museum pass, then where do I buy the RER ticket, can I buy it at the station Micheal Notre Dame 8:30 AM?
Thanks

Are you aware that the museum pass is only for consecutive days? If you start on Wednesday at the Louvre, Thursday is day 2, Friday is day 3 and Saturday is the last day you can use the 4-day pass. If you want to go to Versailles on Sunday, that won't work.

You need to plan around that. Check the Paris Museum Pass web site that gives cost of all the museums and see if it is worth it. http://www.parismuseumpass.com/en/home.php

We don't often bother with the pass. You can get past the lines at the Louvre by entering from the Metro station instead of the Pyramid. The only place we've wished we had it was the Musee d'Orsay and we just stood in line in the rain. It didn't take all that long and there were sidewalk entertainers to watch.

You can get the Paris Museum Pass at any museum covered by the pass, the FNAC store or the Tourist Information Centers. You can buy the RER ticket at the St. Michel RER station. We usually buy a carnet of 10 Metro tickets for daily transportation and then purchase RER tickets separately to Versailles or the airports.

August in Paris is not going to be as crowded as you think because many businesses are closed (not tourist things) and many Parisians will have left the city for their summer vacation. It's actually a good time to visit.

Thank you very much for the quick ans. After check the web site, I think if I use 4 days museum pass then I would use it Sun (Versailles), Mon, Tue, Wed. I plan to go to Louvres, NotreDame, Orsay, Arc de Tromphe, Orangie (quick for Water Lily), Textile (quick for daughter). If not then I'll get the 2 days pass for Tues & Wed or Wed& Thurs (last day in Paris). Do u think is it worth the pass? if I dont have the pass I probably will skip the Orangie & the textile

Thanks

The 4-day pass is 45 euros. If you go to the Louvre, the Notre Dame tower (church is free), the d'Orsay, Arc du Triomphe, Orangerie and the Textile, that is 45 euros. Versailles is 15 euros. Even if you don't visit Versailles, you will save 3 euros. If you visit Versailles, you will save 18 euros. That's a nice dinner one evening so I'd say it is worth it.

Be sure you check open and closing days. Museums usually close on either Monday or Tuesday so you have to plan well to see what you want.

Have fun and if you have any spare time, visit my favorite, the Musee du Moyen Age (Cluny Museum).
