| London | Cheaper travel for elderly? Posted: Thu August 7, 2008 11:17 AM UTC
Hi all,
I've had a look on TFL's website but can't really seem to find much info on this... does a 70 year old tourist get discounts on Oyster travel around London, as well as around England? I think as a local they can get discout bus fares in their area, but what about as a visitor? Cheers. |

Not if they buy a Visitor's Oyster, as far as I can see: that just seems to be a standard pay-as-you-go rate:
http://www.tfl.gov.uk/tickets/faresandtickets/visi Ordinary Oyster cards require a photo if they are to be discounted (not for OAPs anyway): 'Oyster photocards enable students and under-18s to travel free or at reduced rates. Discounted travel is also available to London residents on Income Support and customers who hold a New Deal photocard. ' So I think the answer is no: older Londoners get free travel using the Freedom Pass, visitors get no discount with Oyster nor do there seem to be any discounted single fares/travelcards specifically for pensioners. Older visitors don't get free travel around England either, as far as I know. You have to buy a railcard to get railfare discounts and would have to show your bus pass on buses anyway (and a visitor won't have one, obviously).

Concur with above re visitors. Residents of England over 60 who hold a county-issued travel card/pass (sorry, I cannot at the moment remeber what it is called) are entitled to free travel on local buses (and half-price local trains) out of peak hours and all day weekends - this is valid England-wide regardless of the issuing county. Big plus is that it is valid for travel on London buses. The key is that you have to be a resident of England. There is a similar scheme for Scottish residents but for use only in Scotland, so they don't have the plus of London buses!
