Berchtesgaden Where to stay at Berchtesgaden would be more convenient?
Posted: Tue August 5, 2008 12:18 PM UTC
Hello,

I intends to stay at Berchtesgaden for 1 night. I will go to Konigssee lake and the Mount Jenner (take trails). Would you recommend me to stay at the hotel near the main train station or near the Konigssee lake?

Many thanks.

It pretty much depends on what type of transport you'll have while there, and also what type of vacation you are seeking. The lodging nearer the lake should be quieter. If you stay in town, however, you'll be closer to the restaurants and shopping. I personally thought town was just fine. The views are very, very nice. Gary

I have stayed in Berchtesgaden many times but would have loved to stay at Königssee - unfortunately it was always fully booked as I went there for big bobsleigh competitions. Surely Königssee is more romantic. There are also restaurants, so there would be no need to go to Berchtesgaden. And Jenner is right above the lake, so another reason for staying at Königssee if you find affordable accommodation there.

I will go by train. It seems that it's nice to stay in both areas. Which pension or hotel (with reasonable price) you stayed before and you would recommend to me? Thanks.

I can't help with the hotel as I always stayed in private lodging. You might wish to check the Berchtesgaden travel guide here on VT though. You can also click on the "Book Travel" block at the top of the page to do a hotel search. Enjoy your vacation. Gary

You have to go through Berchtesgaden on the way to Königssee, so you will see both places anyway. And it's only a few kilometres away, so no problem at all.

Difficult to remember the names of the hotels...

One of them was Alpenhotel Kronprinz:

http://alpenhotel-kronprinz.de/

Is above the town centre with good views. The prices still seem reasonable. Click on "Zimmerpreise" for the rates.

You can check out more in this google result:

http://www.google.de/search?hl=de&q=berchtesgaden+hotel&btnG=Google-Suche&meta=cr%3DcountryDE

You must imagine Berchtesgaden as a small and compact place, so you can reach nearly every hotel on foot. Only beware of hotels several kilometres outside town - but this should be mentioned in the descriptions. I once stayed in one outside... There was a bus stop nearby - but no views and not a very handy location if you had no car...

On the website of this hotel: http://www.alpenhotel-fischer.de/anfahrtsskizze/index.php

you see quite well how Berchtesgaden is layed out. "Markt Berchtesgaden" is the town. "Bahnhof" means Railway Station.
(BTW Rates (= Preise) of this hotel look quite reasonable, and it is located on the road to Königssee, bus stop two minutes away.)

This:

http://www.berchtesgadeninfo.de/

is Berchtesgaden's tourist website with English version and an extensive accommodation guide. I just looked over the page. Already the photos of the hotels in this picture-perfect landscape make you want to get there immediately ;-)

For hotels at Königssee you have to look at: Schönau am Königssee.

Hotel Schiffmeister is great.

Have you considered staying a night longer and visit Eagle's Nest which is just a short drive (bus) from Berchtesgaden? Or do you visit in winter? (In this season the road is closed.)

We will go in mid September. Because of tight schedule, we can only stay 1 night at Berchtesgaden. Anyway, thanks all for the advices and useful information. Have a nice weekend!
