Venice Venice at New Year - Advice Needed
Posted: Tue August 5, 2008 09:06 AM UTC
Hi there,
We will be travelling to Venice for New Year and staying in an aprtment near to the Campo Santa Margherita. I would love to go to St Marks Sq for midnight, but I'm a bit worried about the crowds - can anyone tell me if it's a bottle neck - I don't mind crowds as long as I've got a way out! I was thinking abouit trying to find a spot where we could see the fireworks but not be in the square? Any reccomendations?

Also, I don't know much about nightlife in Venice, is Campo Santa Margherita a good place for bars etc? Is much open after midnight on NYE?

If anyone has any advice, it would be much appreciated!

Thanks

I have been in Venice for New Year 2008. The square itself was very crowded and, just after midnight it got worst as everybody wanted to go somewhere else but the access points are small. All will be fine if you stay in the area near Palazzo Ducale more than near St. Mark, and just wait there some time after midnight.
I have to day that quite often during New Year celebration there are many parties in the most central squares (campi) of Venice, much more enjoyable than the crowd in St.Mark Square. Take a look here http://www.capodannovenezia.com/feste.htm to check on them, they will build in the 2009 page soon. (in italian sorry)
Have a great time there.

Thanks very much OriettaIT for your reply - I've tried the Capodanno website - it's down at the minute but I will keep trying!!!

How was the weather for you? Should I expect rain?

Grazie!

I think the website will be setted up with information close to the event, about rain... who knows? I have got a nice night, very cold but no clouds, I think I have been just lucky :-)
