| Tokyo | Trip to Tokyo with a mission! Posted: Sun August 3, 2008 02:42 PM UTC
Hi,
I'll be traveling to Tokyo next week, and I got a *mission*, i.e. a request to bring back peaches! Will I be able to find any peaches in the supermarkets during this period, and could anyone advise where's the best place to purchase the peaches. Is there any particular prefecture where the peaches are grown, and that I should try to get it?! Oh! What's the most convenient way to travel from Narita Airport to Shin-Okachimachi station >> without too much walking!;-) Thanks in advance. |

I don't know where to get the peaches, but where are you bringing them back to? If coming back to the US, they will probably be confiscated....but I could be wrong.

Yes, old dude is correct. Check first of all if you will be permitted to bring them into the country that you will be returning to! Many countries in the world do not permit the import of fresh fruits or vegetables w/o a special license.

Thank you gentlemen! I'm fully aware that I won't be able to bring it to the U.S... but I'm going back home for my vacations to >> Singapore! When I head back to the U.S. - you bet you won't be able to find any fruits/vegetables or any other edible items in my suitcase!;-)
Therefore, my queries are still "hanging in the air"! I'd appreciate comments from forumers who have stayed in Tokyo for a period of time. Thank you.

Well, I lived in Japan for more than 4 years and spent some time in Tokyo. The reason I said I had no idea was I never specifically bought peaches in a supermarket. However, they should still be in season so check Jusco or any other large market. Incidentally, Okayama Prefecture produces the most peaches in Japan, but there are orchards near Tokyo as well. Okayama Prefecture is located next to Hiroshima. I owned a car while living there, so I can't tell you the best way to get to the station Shin-Okachimachi station. I would imagine it to be one of the hotel buses or the train. Any current Tokyo residents out there can answer this question?

Careful with that 'gentlemen' bit. It is inaccurate :-)
Try www.japan-guide.com A great site loaded with info and an excellent forum.

Olddue - Thank you very much for your advice on the peaaches. As I'll be travling to Hokkaido as well; I'll check it out if I'd be able to find any! Otherwise, I'll check out the supermarkets at Jusco and Mitsukoshi.
Hi UnaS - I'm sorry about that - just took at quick look at your travel blog, and like yourself - I'd been traveling solo as well - just that I've to reach the stage of being a granny. I could see that you'd been very adventurous and had covered an impressive no. of places! Keep up your traveling bugs!;-)

Not wanting to be sarcastic, but as OldDude said, try a grocery store. Any train station will have a department store with a basement devoted to food.
Your other option is to order it all packaged up, nice and secure, and then carry it with you on the plane, or have it shipped for you... http://www.bidders.co.jp/pitem/90150924 $50 - not a bad deal to save yourself all the hastle.

Sfumatopants - I don't understand what you're trying to say - but look >> Besides Jusco; I was informed that Mitsukoshi supermarkets do stock up seasonal fresh fruits and I do appreciate the advice given by olddude!
FYI - I can't read Japanese so the site is useless to me!

You may not be able to read Japanese but the Concierge at your hotel will be able to take care of it. They may even know a better source for shipping fruit!

hello
peaches are in season at the moment..Jusco has them for almost 500 yen for 4 in pack..any local supermarket will have it too.. the better/higher quality of the peach the higher the price.. If you do go to a department store..it will cost you an arm and a leg:-) U..

I was going to recommend Okayama too, a prefecture known for their peaches. I think the Japanese folktale "Momotaro" (Peach Boy) originates from that area. You could probably find peach orchards there too, if they are in season. If not, supermarkets/shopping streets should have them.
