Ko Chang Ko Chang for 'oldies'
Posted: Fri August 1, 2008 05:51 PM UTC
After living in Hong Kong for many years (years ago) and visiting Thailand fairly often we would like to return, travelling cheaply as before. We're a good deal older this time and wonder if we will be the oldest backpackers in Thailand. We're in our mid to late 60's now and still fit. We enjoy the company of the young however don't want to feel too out of place! We have heard good things about Ko Chang which we have not visited before.

Any advice would be gratefully received.

Many thanks (hopefully) in advance.

Although we are a bit younger than you (late fifties), last year we back packed through Laos and Cambodia and ended up on Ko Chang.
It isn't quite as hectic as some other Thai islands and only the west coast is really worth visiting. The whole of the centre of the island is still forest.
It seems to have a mixed age group of tourists.
I can highly recommend reasonably priced accommodation at Baan Rim Nam (House on the water's edge). It is a lovelly little place with just three rooms, Booking in advance is a must.
By the way when we stayed at Baan Rim Nam one room was occupied by a young couple from Finland and the other by a seventy-five year old back-packing Granny travelling alone!

Hi Ballyann

VERY many thanks for your very positive reply! Especially about the granny of 75! Well done her. I'm already thought by my 8 grandchildren (my grt grandson is probably too young at 7 months) to be quite 'with it' since I use a playstation!

We live in France and have done for the last 7 years. France is fine in the summer and we admire the culture but the winters.............oh dear! So we will definitely make Koh Chang one our first ports of call since we plan to stay in Thailand for about 3 months at least, it sounds ideal.

Thank you again.

Very best wishes
