January is hot humid and cyclone season. Most accomodation is high end with the odd 3 stars and self catering, especially at Flic en Flac to the west, and Perybere and Grand Baie to the north. Google Mauritius Apartments and you should come up with something. Even 2* are relatively expensive. Coin de Mire in the north is one of the cheaper nicer hotels (Stayed there) Owned by Veranda Group. Tamarin Hotel to west is also a lovely little gem. Stayed there a few times too. But mainly its 4 and very overpriced 5* places and most hotels are upgrading all the time. Good luck.

Hi

I stayed in Grand Baie last February at the excellent value Dookee House Apartments. I paid just 18 Euros a night (13 GBP) for an en-suite apartment with a kitchenette and a balcony. It is located next to the Super-U hypermarket, just a couple of minutes walk from Royal Road and the seafront. There's a full review on my Grand Baie page if you're interested in reading more:

Have a look at www.hostelworld.com and www.hostelbookers.com for a good selection of cheap apartments and studios.

Grand Baie is an excellent base for exploring the north of the island. You'll find a good choice of restaurants, shops, bars and cafes. The beach at Grand Baie isn't great (because of all the boats in the bay), but there are several beaches close by. The wonderful beaches at Pereybere, Mont Choisy and Trou aux Biches are a short bus ride (5-10 minutes) away.

The public beach at Pereybere is small and often crowded, but walk a little further and you'll find the long sandy Bain Boeuf beach, with lots of space and lovely clear water.

The beaches at Trou aux Biches are also very popular and you'll find beach bars and watersports there, as well as a good choice of beachside accommodation. There were always lots of people on the beach at Trou aux Biches while I was there, but due to its size it never felt overcrowded.

My personal favourite beach was at Mont Choisy. This glorious stretch of sand, backed by tall Casuarina trees, was almost empty when I visited. There are no cafes and bars by the beach, but you'll find a few food stalls and fruit sellers in the shade of the trees behind the beach.

If you decide to stay on the northern coast of the island, be aware that it is a 1 hour taxi ride from the airport at Plaisance in the south east of the island, and this can be quite expensive. I paid the equivalent of 50 Euros to get from the airport to my apartment. At the end of my stay, I asked the owners of the apartment to arrange my taxi back to the airport and it cost the equivalent of only 30 Euros.

Enjoy your trip - Mauritius is a beautiful island and I'll certainly be going back there one day!

Jonathan

Hi,

I would highly recommend Flic en Flac on the west coast. You'll love it. It has all the amenities needed. You can get accomodation at reservations@maurivillas.com. You will not be disappointed,
