Hosting a Dinner
Posted: Fri August 1, 2008 12:47 AM UTC
Hello, all!

I’m going to host a small wedding rehearsal dinner in Los Angeles for my brother in Sept., so I'm looking for ideas for a nice or even a great location. I want to make it something he and his future wife will always remember.

Twelve to 15 people. Within about a 30-minute drive from Garden Grove if possible.

Good food, of course, is the first requirement….but I was also thinking that a view or something a bit special would be nice.

Maybe someplace on the water, between Long Beach and Huntington Beach, watching the sun set? Searching the web I found “McKenna’s on the Bay,” Long Beach, which might fit the bill.

What do you think? I’m open to any other suggestions or ideas!

Thanks!

Try http://www.chowhound.com/topics/388909. The "Windows Restaurant" referred to at the beginning of the page has closed.

There used to be a nice restaurant at the Marina complex in downtown Long Beach, but I haven't been there for a long time. (My brother works and lives in that area). It could well be McKenna's from the website. There are also some places further south... but that may be too long a drive from Garden Grove. I like Seal Beach but can't think of anything too extraordinary there.

Just went to a rehearsal dinner at the Bonaventure Hotel in downtown LA. The bridal party had a buffet service outside at their really cool outdoor lounge. One half of it was blocked off for the wedding party. Good food and a great view of the downtown skyline. Really nice.

If you want a view of the sunset in Newport Beach, which is only about 12 miles away from Garden Grove taking Brookhurst St, southwest to the Coast Highway and turn left and go to the Chart House. They have a view of Newport Bay, a menu for everyone, and they do wedding rehearsal dinners. See their website and click on locations, then California, Newport Beach locaton to view. http://www.chart-house.com/
If a view is not a must, across the street, in Newport Beach, is my favorite that I visit at least once every other month, "Tommy Bahama's Island Grill", with gourmet dining and tropical atmosphere. This is one place that people will remember. See their website and click on stores and cafes, then tropical cafes for Newport Beach info. http://www.tommybahama.com

And if you are willing to go a bit further, check out Las Brisas in Laguna Beach. It's up on a hilltop overlooking the Main Beach and the ocean. Spectactular setting and great food.

Hi Larry, and thanks to you and everyone who replied.

Final count for the dinner was 22. I ending up choosing McKenna'a, in part because they could give us a semi-private room with a view. I must say it was one of the nicest dining experiences I've ever had. The food was really terrific...everyone LOVED what they ordered. The service was wonderful; they cheerfully added seats when more people showed up than I reserved for, and they even gave us free dessert!

I couldn't have asked for a better experience. I think the food was very reasonably priced for the value we received. I would highly recommend them.

Really, I need to write a tip about this place!

Cristina

p.s. the wedding was fabulous! The bride is Chinese, so we had a 10 course gourmet Chinese dinner! (I'm all about the food!)

Glad it went well. Your first instinct was the right choice, McKenna's.
