Glasgow best way to get to Arran

How would I get from Glasgow to Arran? Also, do you know what the cost of entry is into the botanic gardens? Any other recommendations for nature/scenery lovers visiting Glasgow for three days? We will be going over to Edinburgh for five days after. Thanks again for all of your help.

Hi, Here is the link to the ferry timetable :

Admission is free to the Glasgow Botonic Gardens. Here is a link to them:

Calmac run two ferry routes to Arran in summer, but you will have to get yourself from Glasgow to their departure points. Timetables here:

You can get a train direct from Glasgow to Ardrossan, which seems the easiest route (ferry takes just over an hour). Train journey time is just less than an hour. Times and fares on www.nationalrail.co.uk

yep, train is the easiest way, other sights from Glasgow... train to Balloch and see Loch Lomond or get off at Dumbarton and visit the 'rock'. The Ayrshire coast can offer spectacular sunsets but sadly they are a bit unpredictable. I have heard that the Milngavie (pronounced Mill-guy)area offers great views accross the city of Glasgow and beyond.

When you take the train to Ardrossan, make sure the train goes to Ardrossan Pier, otherwise you will have a hefty walk. You should be looking for trains that are going to end up in Largs. The line splits beforehand and you don't want to end up in Ayr!! The Ardrossan Pier trains run to coincide with the ferries (CalMac or Caledonian MacBrayne). If you are there at the right time of year, the Waverley (the last ocean-going paddle steamer in the world) runs trips to Arran from, I think, Largs (easily reached by train from Glasgow) and also from Ardrossan and/or Ayr. However, the Waverley site will give you all info. Another place that's nice to visit within your interests is Kelburn Castle & Country Park (see website). Take the train to Largs and they run a shuttle bus from there.
