Xi'an in one day Posted: Sat July 26, 2008 05:05 PM UTC
Is it possible to "do" Xi'an in one day (staying there at one night)
my idea was:
-terracotta army(one hour travelling, 3 hours visiting. back at noon in Xi'an)
between 1 am and evening:
-Wild Goose Pagodas
-drum tower en bell tower
-muslim quarer (o.a the great mosque, bazaar, Huajue Xiang alley )
-grand south gate, city wall, biking on the wall 2 hours around
(and eventually The Eight Immortals Temple)

Don't miss the Shaanxi Provincial History Museum and Hanyangling. Those were the highlights of my recent trip -- I just went to Xi'an for 4 days earlier this month. Those two together would take up more or less a full day, but you can fit in the Big Goose Pagoda and music fountain in the evening.
Otherwise, your original plan would be better for 1.5 days, not just 1.

I agree that 1.5 days would be minimum to get all that you list and the few random things you'll find on your walks back and forth.

1.5 days would be the minimum. I think you will find that you will want more than 3 hours for the Terracotta Army. Xi'an itself is a fascinating place and to do it at a gallop will not do it justice.

There're of course a lot of people on the TripAdvisor forums who fly in and out the same day, but they usually see only the Terracotta Warriors and almost nothing else, perhaps only a cursory glance at the Muslim Quarter and/or city walls.

Don't count on only one hour of travel time. Buses typically only leave when full, and due to heavy rains & flooding it took us 3 hours to get to the terracotta warriors. It was well worth the trip though!

There are lots of discount agencies, but I found C-trip to work well for me while living in China.

Pay attension if you are getting paper ticket or electronic. If paper, you must have an address in China for delivery, or arrange for airport pick-up.

I'll repeat. Overnight train there and back would save you more time.
