Bali this is really odd - concerning bacon

I've noticed and love the fact that most hotel prices include breakfast.

If bacon is part of the meal is it usually American or British style?

Just curious.

The breakfast that was included in my hotel in Bali was some fresh fruit and toast. You had to pay extra for hot food.

Hi
Well some mixed reactions to your postings,

In most of the higher rated hotels, you should be given a choice of Bacon, either well done or not so well done. You can also get a choice of Beef Bacon or the real stuff from Pig. English style breakfast is available (bacon 2 eggs (fried or scrambled, beans sausage tomatoes, and even some hotels have black pudding,!!! fried bread is not really available, but English breakfast tea finishes the meal in true British style. What a way to start your day.

Hash Browns are readilly available for that American touch.

In the higher rated hotels you might even be given a choice of smoked back bacon, or streaky.

So in answer to your question all the previous posters are correct in their own way (except for the matter of taste good or bad which is a personal thing)it depends on where you are staying and what each individual hotel/resort offers.

Most hotels offer other choices for breakfast, fruit/ cerial and Indonesian.

Welcome to Indonesia, eat English/American/Continental or even try some Indonesian.

Wow, I honestly don't think I've ever heard of beef bacon.

I'm in an odd predicament, because when I go on leave from Iraq, I want the beautiful scenery and cool souvenirs (and cheap lodging) of somewhere other than America, but I'm on a smaller, but growing base, so a lot of the "touches of home" people on the mega-camps get aren't quite here yet, so I'll also be craving a few of the things I really like and miss that I just can't get here.

Allison, I’d be more than happy to cook you up an American breakfast of pork strip bacon, eggs any style you want, home fries to beat the band and fresh home baked toasted bread with fresh strawberry preserves, or blueberry if you prefer. For a starter I’ll make you a “hell’s gate” bloody Mary if you’d like, or a nice refreshing mimosa.

It’s the least a fellow American can do for one our own stationed in Iraq, regardless if you are a service person or with a contractor.

And after breakfast, you can stop by Naughty Nuri’s Warung where Brian (from NYC) would be happy to treat you to a feast of the best BBQ pork back ribs on Bali, and free flow martinis...your choice of Bombay Gin or Absolute.

I’m as serious as a heart attack, so if you plan to head up Ubud way, drop me a line on VT e-mail. Cheers, and enjoy your R & R on Bali!

Hi
Wow Ubudian, the minds picture of that breakfast made my mouth water and I an fron England!!!

So in the interests of international co-operation I offer a similar style breakfast (although the style would be more British)to Allison if staying in the Kuta area, and also transportation (if not already organised) to Ubud for that magnificent Breakfast.

Beef bacon is OK but not like the real thing.

As for me, sure, the more the merrier. Let’s see what’s on Allison’s mind and what her timing is going to be.

A successful R & R leave is judged by three factors:

1) The wickedness of your hangover
2) How much weight you put on
3) And another thing, (but this is a family web site), ;<)

And Allison, if you need a place in Ubud to flop for a night or two, you can stay with my wife and our three boys. Frankly, they could use a little DI influence! :<)

And as for your love of ethnic clothing from places you’ve been, we’ll make sure you're hooked up with a great tulis Batik sarong fit for evening wear.

Hello,

So far I don't know when I'm going on leave. I had been planning on April, since my bf will be starting his post-deployment leave around then and I wanted him to join me, but I think I'm going to wind up going earlier. So I'll probably have my mom join me. And hopefully two of my best friends if they can get the time off and remember to get passports.

I haven't quite decided where I'm going to stay. I am pulled toward Ubud, cause I read "Eat, Pray, Love" about 100 times, but I'm also being pulled toward the beach, cause well, it's the beach, and there are few things more wonderful than getting up, putting sunscreen on and then going back to sleep on the beach.

Question, unrelated to food: is there a beach where I won't be bothered by vendors? I appreciate their right to make money, but when I went to Puerto Vallarta last year I found it really hard to completely relax and never got around to going in the water cause I didn't want to leave my stuff unattended.

Thanks for all the breakfast offers! Mimosas sound quite lovely right now...

Hi
there are plenty of beaches around without hawkers, problem is they arn't near to Kuta, having said that, Kuta/Tuban/Legian Beach although there are the usual hawkers that abound nowadays, it's not too bad, but if you want to completely be away from that then don't go there.

Jimbaran bay/gerGer beach in Nusa Dua are two places that fit the bill, there are some reasonably priced hotels/rooms avalable in Jimbaran, and Gerger beach is only aout 15 mins away.

From Ubud the beaches are some time away, but only 1 hour or so, so it could be possible to stay in that area and then spend 1/2 day or even a full day on some really quiet beaches, then return to Ubud area for the rest of the evening.

Whatever or wherever you finally decide, have a great time, relax and enjoy all that we have to offer.

Bali's population is actually majority of Buddhist and Hindu and one of their great speciality dish is roast pork “babi guling”, you can find many road side restaurants serving this delicious dish.
For bacon many hotels in Indonesia, including Bali, will either serve the beef bacon, or set them aside with clear signs indicating that as a pork dish in order not to offend the majority Indonesia Muslim population. I normally stay away from them as they are usually dry and tough as my leather slipper.

Just for the record, and to correct any misunderstandings, Bali has no majority of Buddhists. While Buddhism does factor into Agama Bali, the Balinese are of the Hindu faith, but here it uniquely incorporates elements of Buddhism and also animism.

Also, and just for the record, the Balinese never worry about “offending” Muslims. While Indonesia is predominantly Muslim, it is a very moderate form of Islam, and in truth, many of our non Balinese Indonesian friends, who are Muslim, chow down on babi guling when they visit Bali.

Completely agree with Pak Ubudian, indeed there are some Balinese that pracice Buddism in it's true form, and there are also Balinese who practice Christianity and some have converted to the Islamic (Indonesian) faith, the majority are Balinese Hindu, and by and large all faiths are respected by all, here in Bali, and generally live in peace and harmony with each other.

There is nothing my wife's family (Indonesian Muslim)who visit us here in Bali, enjoy more than the Sunday get togehter for a roast pork joint (especially the crackling)although they do tend to smother it with chilli sauce, and leave the roasted potatoes and vegitables all for me!!!

agreed with both of you, Bali is a place where all the religions seemed to live in harmony except of course a couple of incidents in the past. I think many establishments still prefer to "play it safe" so they do not end up being caught in the cross fire.

It may be that what I was trying to say about Buddhism in Bali was lost in translation, and that is my fault...very sorry.

The point I was trying to make is that Buddhism is an essential part of Agama Hindu, or Hindu/Dharma in Bali. The three aspects of the unique style of Hinduism in Bali are...Hinduism, Buddhism, and Animist beliefs. .

In other words, all Balinese encompass some facets of Buddhism in their religious beliefs as opposed to some Balinese being Buddhists. In no way are the Balinese Buddhists, but they have adopted some elements of Buddhism into their own unique take on Hinduism.

My Balinese wife was totally out of her element when visiting Hindu temples in India, and conversely, most Indian Hindus are equally out of place when visiting temples in Bali.

In all of the five major temples of Bali, there are places within those temples set aside for the Buddha. The historical precedent for this goes all the back to the Majapahit Dynasty, and even earlier, and as played out in Java. These influences all came about as a result of trade, or commerce which began in the 7th century with Goa, (India) followed very shortly by the Chinese, during the T’ang Dynasty...8th century AD.

Hindu comes in many forms. It is different in Bali and again different in other places like Trinidad. My friend in Trinidad is Hundu and he said it is totally different to the Indian Hindu.
