Hi, I was in Bari a few weeks ago. I really liked the city so I think you've made the right decision to visit. The guidebooks seem to leave out all the good stuff.
I wasn't on my own and we didn't go to the old part at night so I can't help you on that but what I can say is that there was quite a police presence in those streets. Not so as you'd be alarmed, but there are officers on scooters, a patrol car every so often. The locals we met were all fine. There were a few other tourists (not very many) and several people were wandering around taking photos on their own. I didn't feel that the risk of getting your camera stolen, for example, was any greater than anywhere else I've been in Italy of that size. You might want to stay in the new town anyway in the evening - good restaurants. You can easily spend a day exploring Bari, two if you're taking it easy, but you might want to take a trip elsewhere on at least one of the days. We went to Lecce and Ostuni which are close enough to do as day trips, but there are places closer to the city as well. If you look through the threads in the Bari forum you'll see a recent question which got some good replies. I have some more info on safety and other things on my Bari page.

BluLama has right...however the Old Town is the center of the Bari's nightlife:many bars, restaurants, pizzerie, pubs are there,so don't be afraid!Try to go to Corso Vittorio Emanuele II,Piazza Mercantile,Piazza Ferrarese,Via Manfredi,Via Vallisa,etc..and there's a lot of people!Try only to avoid isolated alleys, but they're far from the "night zone". However,as soon as possible,I will write more about Bari's nightlife, because many people are afraid...however,in Italy,a new guide of Puglia by Lonely Planet is available: it's updated at the new situation.
