Rome Inexpensive Accomodations
Posted: Fri July 25, 2008 01:47 PM UTC
I am in need of recommondations for a hotel or B&B in Rome for a probable trip next Spring. I am single. My requirements are centrally located, not more than
120 Euro, preferably $100 USD a night or less, acceptance of credit cards and/or travlers checks (I read many budget places dont accept plastic). Also if they have a tour desk or concierge, that would be beneficial. No smoking is a must.

Maybe this links helps:

I have been in the S. Emilia Vialor. It is a very simple, but clean accomodation in a convent in a strategic position looking into the Vatican Garden. The email address I have is: sja.roma@flashnet.it

Accross the street there is a more expensive one: Casa Bonus Pastor, Via Aurelia 208, 00165 Roma, Ph. 06 69871281 email bonuspastor@glauco.it

Hope this helps

How long will you be there? If you are staying a week, you might want to look into renting an apartment because you can save a lot of money this way by cooking your own food. You will have more room and maybe even a washing machine.

"S. Emilia Vialor... Casa Bonus Pastor, Via Aurelia 208"

This is an interesting neighborhood, in that it is not what most people think of tourist Rome. Both of these places are on the west side of the Vatican (the opposite side from St. Peter's and the rest of Rome) in an area of apartments, villas, and trees on the grounds of the villas and high walls along some of the streets.

We stayed in an apartment complex (speaking of apartment complexes) just a few yards down the Aurelia in the direction of the Vatican - see http://www.aureliaresidence.it/ . Note, however, they tend to rent for a week or more...on the other hand, they are nice apartments with plenty of beds (in every alcove it seems), with a full kitchen lacking only an oven - i.e., it has a full size refrigerator, dishwasher, range, microwave, coking pots and pans, utensils, dishware...the only thing we needed to do was to go to a nearby grocery store and buy the basics such as salt and pepper and cheese and oil and whatnot. It also has offstreet parking and a washer/dryer...it's not cheap so it's probably not for you, but I wanted to pipe in about the neighborhood.

You are not particularly close to the sights - even St. Peter's is a long walk around to the east side of Vatican City - about 1.5 kilometers, but it's almost all through this relatively quiet residential neighborhood. I guess that would be the point...this is a residential and often treed residential neighborhood that is where Romans live.

Public transportation is everywhere. The part of the Via Aurelia that these places are on may not have buses (the Via Aurelia to the west has lots), but you have two easy solutions. The first is to walk in a little roundabout way north to the Valle Aurelia Metro station which will take you in the direction of the Piazza del Popolo, Piazza di Spagna, and Stazione Termini. For getting to the other side of Rome, this will be much faster than buses. The second solution would be to walk southeast (past our apartment) on the Via Aurelia, until it hits the Via di Porta Cavalleggeri near St. Peter's, where there are many buses, or southwest to the Via Gregorio VII (Settimo), which feeds in to the Cavalleggeri...

So, if you want to walk out the door and be at the Pantheon, these places aren't it. But if the price is right and you don't mind being in a pleasant residential neighborhood with good transportation access, this might be just the sport.
