Vote number three for Rapid City. The downtown area has an art project that features bronze statues of U.S. presidents- they don't have them all yet, but we spent a very enjoyable Sunday afternoon viewing and photographing them. Minerva's is a very good restaurant, and we enjoyed a place called the Old Mill Restaurant for breakfast and lunch.

You have to have a car to get around- and don't forget the Crazy Horse Monument. We also enjoyed Bear Country and finding the scenic, somewhat retro Dinosaur Park. You're not far from Deadwood- you might enjoy one of the restaurants there for dinner, and one of the casinos for after dinner entertainment. I also enjoyed learning about the Black Hills Gold, and seeing the mining and jewlelry making process.

Wall Drug is the ultimate in tourist traps- remember that they will give you free bumper stickers, ice water and mileage signs if you ask.

Good luck- hope you have a great time.

I agree with Rapid City, it is the most central area for a number of interesting things to do. If you like to gamble, or if you don't like to gamble, but are interested in the gold rush era of the west, then be sure to check out Deadwood when you are in the area. This is a very historic town, that uses some funds from its casinos to preserve it's history. You will not find the glits of Las Vegas, as each casino is tucked inside a historic building, so that Deadwood still has its old town look. My favorite restaurant in Deadwood, although somewhat expensive, is Jakes. It is located in the Midnight Star, which is a casino owned by Kevin Costner. This casino is decorated with costumes in glass cases, posters, and photos from many of his movies. Jakes is a fine dining restaurant at the top, with linen napkins and tablecloths, impeccable service, and excellent food.
