We plan to travel to Sicily in October 2008 and stay in CEALU. Who knows the best way (and cheap!) from Palermo airport to Cefalu?

Train direct from the airport itself to Palermo Centrale and then find a train rattling down the Palermo Messina line (change train). Palermo Centrale doesn't have too many platforms and has displays showing the stops. Cefalu is about 12 stops down the line. The station before Cefalu is Lascari - Gratteri.

Some of the trains going down the Palermo Messina line maybe going to other places on the mainland of Italy. Just check that it stops at Cefalu.

It can be a drag lugging your baggage but it is the best way.

I was thinking about renting a car but I saw the picture on your page .... :-)
I'm an experienced driver (I think so) and I have another question - is it easy to drive from Palermo to Cefalu? What can you say about traffic? And road conditions?

Renting a car would be a good option. Thankfully to get to Cefalu from the airport, you do not have to go into Palermo proper, but you do need to go through the outskirts and you must have your wits about you. There are no set lanes and you must drive confidently as they will tend to push you around.

The road however is very direct and you do not have to make any deviations to get through these outskirts and eventually to the autostrada which takes you to Cefalu. There is one point a little way out of Palermo where you must bear left (take the left lane which heads towards Messina). I think there will only be two toll booths to negotiate, one where you get a ticket (spits out automatically - or press the red button). You will then pay at the exit at Cefalu (probably no more than 4.80 Euro. There is one unmanned toll booth on the way that has been closed. Good luck. Any more questions, email me if you like.
