hi what is expensive, could you give some examples in dollar amount? would be big help.trying to only take carryon so wont be able to take all the normal shampoo, bug spray, etc

They have the chain store called Watsons in Bangkok. You will find prices for toiletries there are good, and often on sale, but I can't give examples. I have never really needed bug spray in Bangkok.

Boot's stores are even more common. You'll have no trouble finding whatever you need there, often on sale as well. They are located in all the major malls, as well as many outlets around town.

Bug spray/shampoo cheap. Sunscreen expensive as imported.

Along with Watsons & Boots there is also the Big C & Tesco supermarkets they sell everything you may need at very cheap prices.
