We stayed at this Logis de France/Relais du silence on a similar journey:-
http://www.relaisdusilence.com/EN/France/Lorraine/ L'Oree du bois was a really wonderful place for a great nights sleep and an excellent meal. Not the Cheapest place to stay but a mmemorable experience. For somwhere less expensive I can also recommend the Bellevue Clermont en Argonne, 55120 Meuse, Lorraine It isa 2*, 2 Chimney Logis de France and is on the main road through the village. We first stayed there in 1985 when it was very run down but on our last visit 3/4 years ago it had been smartened up a lot. You can find it on www.logis-de-france.fr

Well east of Reims,in the centre of Clermont en Argonne, on the N3, about half way between Verdun and Chalons en Campagne.
If you go to the Logis de France website link I gave you it should have a map or directions.

Do you have a car?
If so, I have two B&B addresses for you. I admit it's a detour (specifically Vézelay), but most of it is motorway. One is in Vézelay, lovely old town and important stop in the Compostela pilgrimage route: Tour Gaillon, further info at: http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/2bf0c/146f8/3/ About 3 hours from Paris. The other is in Escolives-Sainte-Camille. Domaine Borgnat is not only a B&B but also a winegrower: http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/2bf0c/1e7e4/3/ About 2 hours from Paris. I pass by almost every year at both addresses (though I have private accommodation in the region now). Both B&B's are still in place since I first stayed there in 1994.

Depends on the route you take. Although ATLC's tips are intriguing Ranger clearly stays along the direct route.

I'll toss in another option which may be useful if this stop is the last one before returning a hire car to CDG. We often stay at Chateau-Thierry (on the Marne) - type it into viamichelin lin. see the hotel recommendation at my page on C-T (if you wish): http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/ae2c2/1fb8b/

We've stayed in Thieblemont-Faremont at Le Champenoise, but it's no longer a Logis de France so you'd have to book direct. Vitry-le-Francois is the nearest to halfway and Logis Hotel de la Cloche looks nice and is in a convenient location to walk around town a bit.
The trip from Colmar to Paris is 453 km or nearly 6 hours so you could drive straight through and we've done that. It's not a good idea if you are tired though. The Logis de France chain of small family-owned hotels is a good choice to get the flavor of France, a good meal and a clean room with friendly staff. When we're on the road in France, we nearly always use them. http://www.logis-de-france.fr/uk/ On the other hand . . . I love ATLC's suggestion of a visit to Vezelay. It is absolutely magical and if you haven't seen it, it is worth a detour.

There are undoubtedly nice B&B's (Chambre d'hôte) along the direct route.
Have a look at http://www.gites-de-france.com/gites/uk/bed_breakfasts

Thanks for all the advice. Is Vitry-le-Francois a nice place?

Hi. Vitry-le-Francois is not on the tourist path, except to drive through, but it's a very nice little town. If you want to do touristing there, visit the Collegiale Notre-Dame and take note of the fantastic 18th century organ (purchased long after the church was built). There is la Port du Pont, a huge triumphal arch that was rebuilt and moved after WWII. The Hotel de Ville (city hall) is a former convent that is a historic landmark and the gardens have won prizes. The Lac dur Der is nearby although we've never seen it. Most lakes are attractive! 8^)
There's quite a bit to do in the area but if you are doing an overnight stay, the immediate town is all you will have time to visit and there is certainly enough to keep you busy for an afternoon and evening. Here's the town tourist web site: http://www.tourisme.fr/office-de-tourisme/vitry-le-francois.htm
