Copenhagen Currency Exchange
Posted: Wed July 23, 2008 02:13 AM UTC
I will be in Copenhagen for about 3 weeks. I am staying in a B&B and they require me to pay me in CASH only. That means I either have to withdraw using ATM (would avoid as my Australian bank account charges hefty fees) or exchange currency at the airport. About exchanging currency, I am hearing lot of opinions - some bank being very expensive, some exchange outlet charges fees. What is the best and cheapest way to exchange, say US or AUS dollars, at the Copenhagen airport?

I think we'd all like the solution to this one. Some say the airport change counters are good sometimes and not others, the ATM's do have charges, this we know. The bottom line is that you are going to be charged wherever you go for foreign exchange. It is, after all, one of the world's biggest industries. Sure, there are some ways of exchanging your money that will be a little bit cheaper than some others, but at the end of the day, I don't think there is all that much in it, certainly not enough to be stressing about. Having said that, if you find a really cheap way of doing it, could you let us know please?

Hi,
I exchanged the currency at my local HSBC in Hong Kong before going to Denmark and I found that it was the best rate - beats forex, airport etc. The trick is to calculate fairly accurately how much cash you need to avoid changing back the excess.

Chances are you'll be taking the train to the main railwaystation from the airport? There's a FOREX exchange at the railway station - these are usually the cheapest and easiest way to change money.

I wouldn't be so sure that taking the money from an ATM is a bad idea though. Chances are you're getting much better rates.

Right now FOREX is buying 100 AUD for 443,07 DKK, and there's no commission. You can see the latest rates at http://www.forexvaluta.dk/ They're open from 8 A.M. to 9 P.M.

Enjoy your vacation here in Copenhagen!

Hi,

I saw VIRTUALTOURIST via google searching, when i saw your question, i made the registration here to reply you, hoping that i could give you some useful info for your trip. I was back from DENMARK and SWEDEN last month. I stayed there for about 3-4 days.

The denmark gave me a very impressive thing: expensive in everything. For the exchange of currency, please do not change at DENMARK(airport or hotel or exchange agency), as it charges a lot. They charge more 10.99% service fee besides the very low rate, i think it better do it in Germany or your local bank.

As Sweden, it takes about 40 minutes from COPENHAGEN to central MALMO(the frontier city). Before going to Sweden, my friend tried to stop me: Haze, i think no need to go to Sweden, Sweden is not big difference with DENMARK. At last, i still visited it, i thought: i am near Sweden, how can that be that i do not go to Sweden? Haha, i went to Malmo viewinging the BALTIC SEA. So beautiful!!! And, there is the bus directly from MALMO train station to BALTIC SEA, it is free if you show the train ticket to the bus driver. I did not go to Stockholm after viewing MALMO, as really similar as DENMARK.

I suggest you to visit NORWAY if your visa is allowed. This is a country different as Denmark/Sweden. It is a pity to me because NORWAY is not SCHENGEN country. NORWAY is interesting, i hope that i could visit next time.

If anything, please let me know, i will try to provide more info.

Wishing you a pleasant journey in DENMARK.

Best regards,
Haze

Thanks a lot guys.

I did visit Norway last time around and I am sure it is part of Schgen. To my experience, I found Norway to be best as far as natural beauty is concerned.
