If you can tell me more about your minimum requirements, I can make some recommendations. The main thing to remember about Danau Toba in particular is that while it is beautiful and idyllic, the electricity is also quite irregular.
In the meantime, you might enjoy these two pieces I wrote: http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/637801/da http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/636127/vo

And thank you to John too for the info. Actually I would prefer the accomodation to be comfortable especially for my parents.

Hi, on last March 2008 I had nice experience using a car rental of "paradep taxi" mobile : +62-813.7691.2330. It uses a new family car that can accommodate 8 peoples (including driver), rental cost is about $55/day including gasoline and driver fee. At Berastagi I suggest you to stay at "Sibayak Hotel" (****), and at Danau Toba I recommend you "Niagara Hotel" (****). Since you are a foreigner I'm sure you will be charged higher than Indonesian people (US$ 55-60).
Have a nice trip.

Thanks Farah for your useful suggestion. I will consider your option. Actually I was thinking of staying at Grand Mutiara hotel at brastagi but since you suggest Sibayak hotel, I will look into this hotel and decide.
Thanks again. We hope we have an enjoyable holiday.

Sibayak International is a good hotel as well as Sinabung which is a really good 4 star hotel not from Sibayak International. All depends on how how you want to pay. There is a list of hotels with prices on contact details at this page:
http://www.sumatra-indonesia.com/Berastagi.htm Also if you are going to lake toba there is also a list of hotels here: http://www.sumatra-indonesia.com/Laketoba.htm Have a great trip
