Forum Question Posted By: Replies:
Australia Broome to Darwin
Posted: Tue July 22, 2008 09:18 PM UTC
I am pretending to go in a 4WD tour from Broome to Darwin in 9 days .
"The prices I get in Internet for this tour are higher than the air tickets price from Spain and return , though we get the camping option "
We are travelling at the end of the dry season , at the end of September

Is it better to book the tour by Internet or to wait and make the arrangements in Broome ? Will I find more alternatives and better prices directly on the spot ?
The same question should apply for other tours in Alice Spring , Tasmania , East Coast ...

Thank you !!!
Gracias !!!

Hi Check out the conditions for driving a 4 wheel vehicle, most hire coys do not allow use on dirt roads.

The road from Broome to Darwin via Katherine is a sealed highway and you do not need a 4 wheel drive, just get a small car.

Are you taking a 4 wheel drive tour with a group??? If so they may have special condition for off road, you should check.

I nam thinking of driving Broome to Darwin nexy year. We live in Perth and the Perth Broome drive will take 4 days which is off putting, but our sedan will handle the sealed roads well. We might take a 4 wheel drive tour from Broome to experience the off road sights.

Are you going via the Gibb River Road, or via the Great Northern Highway? And which places are they saying you will visit? Some places you might stay along the way are quite expensive so that could explain some of the costs. It all depends on what they're offering.

First of all thank you very much to both of you ( Gracias!!!)
We should like to make the Gibb River Road , as we think that is a very scenic and interesting road and we may not see nothing like that in Spain

Some of the places we are visiting are :

Willare Bridge ,Oscar Range , Tunnel Creek
Winjana and Barnett Range
Kimberley Cannions
Cockburn ranges
Marglu Billabong and Bungle Bungle ( Echidma Chasm and Cathedral cannion )
Kunnunura and Hidden Valley
Victoria River
Katherine cannion
I think it will be a hard travel but very interesting
Thank you for your help

Some of those places you reach from the Gibb River Road, some you reach from the Great Northern Highway. It would be a bit hard to do all of them in the one trip without travelling a couple of times along the same bit of road. There's a lot of great places to see from the Gibb River Road, but they're often a long way off on a dead-end side road. The Bungle Bungles (Purnululu National Park) you won't see anywhere else in the world. Echidna Chasm and Cathedral Gorge are good, but it would be even better if you could go right up Picanniny Gorge (most tours only go to the start of it, if at all).

September is late in the tourist season so some tours might be closing down or running fewer times. Waiting until you get there could mean there's no places left for you. So probably via the internet is the safest way to do it.

Hi Juan and Mercedes I have just got back from Broome. Have been to Fitzroy Crossing and along the way stopped off at Geikie Gorge,Tunnel Creek and Windjana Gorge. I have taken some video of part of the road so you can get an idea of the sort of roads you will travel on.They should be on my Kimberley or Derby pages- not sure as first time I have done this! I have also taken some photos of the Britz cars which are 4wd but you can also sleep in them.See the Kimberley page. An alternative you might consider is staying in caravan parks. I have also tried to get some other information but it will take a bit of time for me to download as I am now back at work unfortunately. :(
