| Brescia | Verona Brescia Airport Posted: Mon July 21, 2008 07:33 PM UTC
Hi there. Was wondering if anybody could advise how to get from Verona Brescia airport to Gravedona on the North West side of Lake Como by public transport (bus, train or ferry) - travelling there for a short break on Wednesday.

I can assist you but you have to let me know if it is Brescia or Verona airport you are lying into as they are completely separate.
I will also need the approx time you are due to land as that will determine how to reach Gravedonna. Regards, Billy

I would assume that the OP means the Verona Brescia Airport, as Ryanair "proudly" calls it.

It would be useful if you could post up the answer!
I too am considering a Ryanair flight to Brescia and am heading for Como - is it easy/cheap to get from the airport to the railway station in Brescia and then get an onward train or are there better ways of doing it? Thanks!

It depends on which town on the lake you are travelling to, in this instance the OP was travelling to Gravedona which is more difficult to get to because of its north west position.
Pls let me know where you are staying so that I may assist you. Billy

Hi Billy,
Thanks for your reply - well, if you know the area well, it would probably be better if I paint the whole picture for you! We can fly with Ryanair either to Milan Bergamo or Brescia and I'm trying to work out which would be better! We haven't booked a place to stay yet so I'm not totally sure where we're going but my mother (it's her 60th birthday trip) has given me a shortlist to research. Top of the list for her at the moment is Belaggio but she also asked me to look at Menaggio or Lenno - but maybe you know another place too? Somewhere from which the interesting parts of the lake can be explored, and has a nice, authentic feel, pretty and quiet but with some restaurants. If you even can recommend a place to stay that's the icing on the cake! But don't worry, just advice regarding the airports would be great! Thank you so much for your help.

I have journeyed to Varenna 6 times in the last 8 years, travelling there in different ways and I have to say that Bergamo is probably the best airport for accessing Lake Como.
Now obviously alot depends on the time your plane touches down but I'll proceed with assumption that it is not too late in the day, lets say 1200. On touching down you exit into the arrivals hall and look for the closeby Orio Shuttle Box where you buy a ticket for the 10 minute ATB bus ride into Bergamo railway station costing €1.65 each way, bus every 30 mins. The staff there will point you in the direction of the bus stance outside the rather small airport terminal. At the train station you will purchase a ticket to Varenna which, if you look at a map of the lake, lies in the centre directly opposite Mennagio and Bellagio (niether of which is reachable by train). Train journeys can be reseachered at the website http://www.trenitalia.it/en/index.html The train journey will take approx 1hr 15mins with a change at the small station at Lecco and cost €4.10 one way. In Varenna it is a 10 minute downhill walk to the ferry teminal wher there are frequent ferries to either Bellagio or Mennagio taking approx 20 mins. Ferry timetable found at http://www.navigazionelaghi.it/eng/com/nlc.html Now, I have to say that I really enjoy travelling this way but it is not everyone else's cup of tea, but it really is quite straight forword. However, if there a few of you going, a pre arranged taxi from the airport to Varenna should cost appro €100. A firm I have used on 3 previous occasions and would highly recommend can found at http://www.bestviaggi.com/Default.asp?lang=EN just email them for a quote as opposed to filling their on line form. With regard as to where to stay....my preferred choice is the small town of Varenna which while quiet and peacefull, has 6 or 7 hotels and 9 or 10 restaurants. It is also handy for exploring the lake by ferry. For information on Varenna goto http://www.varennaitaly.com/english.html and you may also like to visit my VT page on Varenna and in particular the hotel Albergo Milano at http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/97f16/2268b/ If you have any questions I will do my best to answer them.
