| Tallinn | Boat from Estonia to Stockholm? Posted: Mon July 21, 2008 06:04 PM UTC
Hello all
I'm looking for cheap flights from Tallinn to Dublin but they are pretty much non existent. I'm toying with the idea of getting a boat to Stockholm and flying home from there. My questions are... is there a boat going to Stockholm and does it go to there from many locations in Estonia? Naturally i will be in Tallinn but it would be good to check out some other places too :) Thanks everyone! Douglas |

There is a ferry from Stockholm to Tallinn.
This page has the relevant links: http://www.tourism.tallinn.ee/fpage/travelplanning/arrival/bysea I don't think ferries go anywhere but Tallinn. If you are planning some way ahead, you could think about a cheap flight to Stansted, then fly to Tallinn with Easyjet. The only problem with that is the flight leaves at 06:45, which make for a very early start (I know, I've just come back from Tallinn!). As for travelling within Estonia, look first at the buses rather than the trains. There are excellent and frequent services between many of the larger towns. www.busreisid.ee for buses

This is re your idea of getting a boat from Tallinn to Stockholm. I responded the other day to a similar question. The following may be helpful to you: Last year we visited Helsinki, took a day trip to Tallinn and took from Helsinki to Torku the train; stayed at a Best Western Hotel which was in the port area. Next day we walked to and took the Silja Line ferry to Stockholm. Everything was in daylight hours, delightful and relatively inexpensive. An alternative would have been the overnight ferry from Stockholm to Helsinki. Ours was a better choice.

Correction: The next to last sentence should have read " An alternative would have been the overnight ferry from Helsinki to Stockholm"

Brand new Tallink ferries depart daily 6 pm from Tallinn and Stockholm. A good alternative (if you're not interested in visiting Stockholm, of course), specially considering the price of Stockholm's airport train, would be flying to Stockholm by Norwegian airline. Check http://www.norwegian.no/sw7127.asp
The address for buses that J provided, would be http://www.bussireisid.ee/index.html?MENU=&KEEL=en This is indeed a good website giving you schedules for all routes between Estonian towns. It's also possible to buy tickets online and then print them out in bus station before departure. That's a very convinient option which I use frequently. For peak hours (friday and sunday afternoon) it's advisable to buy your tickets about a day ahead, specially for most popular routes like Tallinn-Kuressaare or Tallinn-Tartu.
