| Madrid | Help! Shopping In August!! Posted: Mon July 21, 2008 02:43 PM UTC
I've been to Madrid a couple of times already but never in August as I've heard the city pretty much shuts down.. I'm on my way to the Balearics, where I go every year but this time I have a one day stop in Madrid, August 6th, which is a Wednesday and I'm wondering if the shops in and around Sol and Fuencarral (Bershka, Blanco, Mango..) will be open or closed and what the hours will be like... This was the only route I could take for the rest of my trip and I'm just worried that I'm going to get stuck with nothing to do for an entire day.. I land at 10AM in Barajas and have already done the whole sightseeing bit and it will be too scorching to bother wandering aimlessly... Please any help or info is appreciated!!!!

All the main stores now stay open-the days of closing for siesta/vacation are disappearing. Many stores are even open on Sundays!

in addition, it will be still sales season. Madrid may be quieter in August (that just mean slightly less hectic) but never shuts down!

forget to say... I was living in Madrid for about 2 years. I did returned about 10 times since then. Even without shopping, I can still think on so many things to do there, and places I still have not seen. There is no reason for aimlessly wandering........

Oh I know LOL.. there is plenty to do there but this time I only have the day.. I will meet with a friend in the evening for dinner but during the day I just wanted to shop. I don't want to do anything but shop! I've been to Spain 20 times but never Madrid in August so I was just curious as my friends in the south say it is very quiet and most shops are closed..I was just wanting to make sure the shops that I like are still going to be open :D
Shopping is very very important to me ;) hahahaha Thank you for all of your answers though! Now I know to leave more room in my luggage! hehehehe

small shops in neighbourhoods at quite a distance from town centre usually close, but sol-fuencarral is the top tourist area, your shopping expectations will be fulfilled, I'm sure.
I reccomend to start in Sol, get Calle del Carmen, Calle Preciados, and then have a look in Gran Vía. Just by the Telefonica building in Gran Vía, it's Calle Fuencarral. From Calle Fuencarral, the whole area is very trendy, reminds me somehow the London Soho
