If I leave Copenhagen day 1 in the morning, and need to be in Hamburg day 2 in the afternoon - what would be the nicest thing to do inbetween?
I thought of renting a car - but I see returning a car rented in Denmark, in Germany is extremely expensive, so hopefuly you will give ideas based on train, or car that can be returned near the border, where I can from there take a train to Hanburg.

drop off the car in padborg/denmark.
that is right by the border.
from there you have several trains a day to hamburg.

driving across denmark you might want to stop in odense and mabye the castle egeskov which is just south of odense.

do you know there is a car rental agency there? I couldn't find any online...

Car rentals covering all Denmark do NOT have offices in Padborg. There is only one local car rental and it will be quite expensive to have the car delivered to Copenhagen.

The easiest is to take the train from Copenhagen to Hamburg. There are several direct trains per day. By reserving in advance via telephone at the Danish Railways (DSB, +45 70 13 14 15), big discounts are available (over 50%). By the way, the train is loaded onto a ferry for the Rødby to Puttgarden crossing.
