| London | Which transport from London to Basingstoke? Posted: Mon July 21, 2008 10:50 AM UTC
Hello there,
we will travel to England next week and will go from London to Basingstoke, where we rented a car. I already checked the internet, which recommended to take South Western Train to Basingstoke. It costs around 25 Pounds per person return - is this a normal rate or could I get with any other transport a cheaper result? Thank you very much in advance. Best regards from Evelyn |

try "megabus" or national express coach - they may have better prices for you

For others' information:
www.nationalexpress.com run coaches to Basingstoke several times a day. Journey time is around 2 hours, standard return fare 17GBP. www.megabus.com do not serve this route.

I would also recommend National Express coaches.
Unfortunately you probably could have got return tickets for cheaper than £25 but only by booking 3-4 weeks in advance via http://www.thetrainline.co.uk National Express coaches are normally very modern and very comfortable but for such a (relatively) short journey might not have a toilet on board so go before you go!

Hi Evelin
Agree with the other posts but the pricing system on British trains is so complex that hardly anyone knows the cheapest ticket. My advice, if you do take the train, ask for the cheapest option at the station. There's usually a day return offer that is the same price or even cheaper than a one way. These are usually also subject to time restrictions. I could go on but really it's best just to ask.
