| Lisbon | Things to do in Lisbon. Posted: Sun July 20, 2008 11:44 PM UTC
Hi everyone,
I will be in Lisbon this September, and was wondering where are the places to go. I am looking at going to the Castelo in the city, but was wondering where else to go to experience Lisbon.I have been to the Jeronimos and other monuments around the Belem area, so I am looking at checking out the inner city and would like some advice. Thanks! Also, is the Cristo Rei open? Every time I have wanted to go there it has been closed for renovations! |

The journey to the Castelo by "electrico" (old tram) is a must.
I liked very much when I went to the Expo pavillions (Praca das Nacoes), around Oriente station. There you'll find a great oceanarium (one of the biggest and most interesting aquarium complexes in the world), nice views from the aerial cable-car. I also found very interesting Calouste Gulbenkian foundation, with its square and a great museum, close to Praça de Espanha station. It has wonderful "azulejos" and moorish pieces (among many other things), and the interior of the exposition interacts, by the windows, with the natural lightening from outside.

Cathdral (Sé) and Alfama district with its narrow and cobbled streets, the Pantheon + Museum of Fado if you like these kind of museums (in Alfama itself, Praça (square) do Comércio and surrounding area (Baixa district), P do Rossio, Chiado and bairro Alto, in short, you can have a look at my page on Lisbon; and if you have time, you can visit Sintra, Queluz and cascais/Estoril

If you've been in Belem I admit that you have already seen central Lisbon - the axis from Marquês de Pombal to Praça do Comercio, passing along Restauradores and Rossio. Tram 28 is a touristy tram crossing that axis and taking you to the castle. Descnding from the castle on foot you may see Santa Luzia, Alfama, Sé or, going a little further, S Vicente, and the Pantheon.
Another option is to see the modern Lisbon - Metro to Gare do Oriente to see Parque das Nações. Isolated visits, you may choose, for instance, Museu Gulbenkian or Tile Museum in Madre de Deus church. With time, Sintra is a must, and You wouldn't regret a day trip to my region: Alcobaça, Batalha, Obidos, Nazaré. My pages may be useful, but be free to ask anything else that you need. Enjoy Avelino

one the first weekend of the September there's the Avante, which is a huge festival organized by the portuguese communist party. Dont worry about the politics. Most of the people who go there arent communists.
In the festival you will find stands for each Portugal region with food and local souvenirs available to buy. You can find almost every food and drink made in Portugal. Avante is on the south side of Tejo. You have to catch the train on Rossio to Sintra, and stop in the next stop at Campolide, and then catch the other train ( its a different platform, ask for guidance" and catch the Fertagus to the South Side. its a 18 minute ride to Foros de Amora where u can catch a bus there. The Fertagus train is the train that passes on the 25April Bridge. Its was a breathtaking view over Lisbon. hope this is a good tip for you.

the above options are really good ones.
My 2 cents: -still around Belém area -the new Berardo collection at the Centro Cultural de Belém and the nice Tropical Gandens -on the way to the center -Museu do Oriente - presently one of the best museums in Portugal -central - Estufa Fria (cold greenhouse) it's a good option if the weather it's to hot in the afternoon; Basilica da Estrela and walk down to the parliament area and then maybe proceed to the Bairro Alto (old neighborhoods) We can even talk about the food places if you want. Cheers
