Sorrento to pompeii - train or car
Posted: Sun July 20, 2008 10:45 PM UTC
We will be staying in Sorrento for 3 days. Our rental car will be in the hotel's free parking lot while we do day trips by bus, ferry, etc. Pompeii and Herculaneum are on the way to our next destination, Rome. Should we see it then or do it by train before we leave Sorrento?

I'm not too sure what the parking situation is at Pompeii. If it's not good then I would certainly suggest doing it from Sorrento by train. The train station is almost right at the gate to Pompeii. Get off the train at Pompeii Scavi. Trains run regularly to and from Sorrento.

train is the best option !Parking is hard to find and also the italian "style of driving" might not be like you are used to !

Leave the car in the parking lot! There are very frequent Circumvesuviana trains from Sorrento to Naples and one of the stops on the way is Pompeii Scavi. The train station is right by the entrance to the site. Couldn't be easier and avoids all the hassle of driving and parking.

Whoops, was a bit quick on the old finger...... Herculaneum is a few stops further up the line from Pompeii and is just as easy to do by train, although it will be a 15 minute or so walk to the site. You can do both in one day if you have to, although I wouldn't, as both merit an unhrried visit, herculaneum in partiuclar. You might also consider visiting Villa Aplontis at the Torre Annunciata stop.

walking from the station to the ancient Herculaneum might be 15 minutes, BUT driving there and searching for a parking closeby might take more than 1 hour of cruising though small streets and finally taking any place in even a far distance...
The trainsystems of Italy and especially there around Sorrento are perfect !

Definitely go to Pompeii/Herculaneum using the Circumvesuviana train. I wouldn't advise driving simply because going by train will be so much quicker (and so much less stressful). Trains are frequent.

Sorrento to Pompeii Scavi takes about 30 minutes, and stops more or less directly opposite the site entrance. The Ercolano stop is about 10 minutes from Pompeii Scavi, an easy walk (downhill) to the site.

Circumvesuviana timetables here:

You need Linea Napoli>Sorrento.
