Beijing Beijing - Must try food
Posted: Sun July 20, 2008 09:33 AM UTC
Will be in Beijing this August with plenty of time and opportunities to explore and try different Chinese food fare in the city.

Would appreciate suggestions of must-try-food, from dining restaurant, food court to street food.

Please let me know the name of place or general location. Xie xie.

Wow, going to the Olympics huh? That's great, SL.

As for food, well since you're in Beijing eat the obvious: Peking duck! And the best place to have the best duck is at the Beijing Hepingmen Quan Jude Roast Duck restaurant (see my Beijing travel page to see a photo of the building frontage). It's near Tiananmen but I unfortunately I don't have the exact address. I'm quite sure however that hotel staff can help you with the directions. Be sure to go there when you're VERY hungry, you'll need lots of space with all the delectable food you'll get to taste there.

Gou Bu Li Baozi! While really a Tainjin speciality, you can get them in Beijing. This is Baozi, a big steamed dumpling containing pork and sometimes cabbage. The name means dogs don't like. I don't know why. They are delicious!

You don't go to BJ without trying the Peking Duck!

Be sure to go to the original store behind Tiananmen Square!!

Steet food! August!! I am not sure if you want to! There are ltos of hot pot places but again they are more for the cold winter.

Look for the Mao restaurant - here's a write up:

It's acclaimed that there are 8 most famous cuisines in China and Beijing has it all. Must tries: Beijing duck, moongolian hot pot, Xinjiang mutton kebebs, Cantonese seafood and other Beijing local food. For the best in each category, I suggest you take advice from Yoyoor(www.yoyoor.com), they'll give you professional advice on where to have the best experience. I've heard that they'll launch Travel-lite service that not only you may divert incoming calls to your mobile in China, you also have access to their English live assistant service.

Skip the Cantonese seafood in Beijing. As we true Cantomnese said, they kill the fish twice up north! The rest great suggestion. By the way, Beijing also has great Korean and Indian food.

Just to update, have eating the Peking duck and Gou bu li dumpling. Also tried the street food at Wangfujing, Noodles Bar for beef noodles, Alameda and Salt, as well as KFC and McDonalds. Tried the local lao beijing yang dang (goat soup), anything once. More days to sample the varieties of foods in Beijing.

Great! Many people don't think Beijing offers much in the way of interesting food, but I like it. It is what we call comfort food in the USA, taste good and very filling!
