Goa Solo female traveller- NY in Goa, advice?
Posted: Sun July 20, 2008 07:34 AM UTC
I am planning on travelling up through SE Asia (Singapore, KL) up to Goa and then over to Delhi where I will do an intrepid tour of Nth India.

I will be alone in Goa however, and just wanted to ask some advice..I plan on being there on NYE. I know that there are lots of parties etc during this time.
Since I will be travelling on my own I was wondering if it would be best to stay in a hostel to meet people in my own age group (mid 20's)? I'm not there to party hard or take drugs or anything like that, But I would like to head over to the beach to experience a Goa NYE party. How safe would this be with other travellers or on my own?

Heya,

The first thing I would tell you is to look CLOSELY at your accommodation before arriving in Goa. People show up to stake out ground for Christmas and New Year's there WEEKS in advance. If you arrive with no place to stay arranged in advance, you will probably find yourself either shut out, or forced to go way upscale to get a room.

Goa is pretty safe. It is the most developed spot in all India as far as tourism goes, and the median standard of living is the highest in the country. Crime isn't too much of a problem, past the usual issues. Tell you the truth, I'd consider a Med party island like Ibizia or Tenerife a more risky place to be than Goa.

As far as meeting other folks, as busy as Goa will be when you get there, I don't think that will be a problem. If you are outgoing, you'll wind up with some group of folks or other solo travelers. The other word I can give you about that is to do your homework about which part of Goa you are staying in before you get there. Different sorts of folks settle into different parts of the coast, so you can save yourself a lot of trouble simply by going to the right place. Braga is very different from Palolem, for example.

Are you going to Hampi afterwards? That is the usual thing for doing after Goa. I recommend it myself, but once again, if you go after NYE, you'll be heading to Hampi at its most crowded, and its capacity is far below Goa's.

Goa is a safe place. The usual things are obvious, don't walk alone at night etc. If I or my friends had to get around at night we used a auto rickshaw driver that we knew and had been recommended to us. My boyfriend and I spent last Christmas and New Year in Palolem. We had a great time. We got there in November and found that the prices do go up by almost double for places to stay at the beginning of December. We ended renting a house as it was cheaper than a beach hut ( I realise that this may not be practical for you). Titanic was one of the places that still had beach huts around that time.

There isn't really much in the way of hostels, it's mainly beach huts and hotels. We met quite a few travelers in Anjuna and Palolem. Hope this helps.

Hi,

The only thing to say is... BOOK YOUR ACCOMMODATION IN ADVANCE if you dont want to spend NYE searching for hotels as Goa is full of tourists during Dec/Jan and finding a suitable accommodation on arrival in Goa is not an easy task specially during Xmas/NewYear period .... almost all the hotels will be running full....

Rest everything will go smooth and you will have a great party time... nothing to be worried about as lots of solo female travelers go there...

Thx

Hi-

I agree with other VTers', book your hotel in ADVANCE. The best thing about New Years in Goa, is that you won't feel alone; there are a ton of tourists around at that time (like myself 3 years back) but found myself amongst a large number of Europeans, which was nice. On my flight from Mumbai to Goa, I felt like a minority in India (I'm Indian) that's how many non-Indian people were on the flight, it was nice and easy to strike up a conversation and just meet random people; so you should be ok.

As far as being a solo female traveler in Goa; I can't truthfully answer that as I'm a male and was with a group of people. Here are the places I went on my 4 days in Goa.

We stayed in Condolim and went to Baja Beach and Anjuna beach as well as rented a scooter and got lost which is always nice. I forgot the place we went to for NYE, but it was a beach party, I believe it was called Zappa's? It was by far the best NYE party I've EVER been to, just wear sandals and shorts and enjoy. I don't do drugs and that was never a concern for me while there.

Keep an open mind, experience it for all its worth. And if you need any advice or anything, feel free to email me...I will try my best.

Cheers from the second city-
