| Munich | Help with Bavarian Ticket Posted: Sun July 20, 2008 05:24 AM UTC
Hi all VTs,
For the Munich --> Salzburg stretch, I read in many threads that I can use the Bavarian ticket. I would like to find out more about the Bavarian ticket My question is... 1) Where should I buy teh Bavarian ticket? I had trouble looking to buy it on the bahn website (nor the description). 2) I read books where you can buy the ticket locally, are seats guaranteed? Can you buy a day earlier and use it the following day? 3) If I got to Fussen a day before going to Salzburg, does that mean I need to get 2 Bavarian tickets? 4) Would you suggest storing luggage at Munich station, and head to Fussen, come back, and go to Salzburg the same night so we could use the pass? Is it generally safe to travel at night? 5) Is it possible to travel from Fussen --> Innsbruck --> Salzburg? Sorry for the many questions. Thanks for your help. Angel |

1. Buy the ticket from a machine on the day of travel.
2. It is only valid in regional trains for which you cannot reserve a seat. In the unlikely case that the train is packed, you have to stand. Can you buy a day earlier and use it the following day? This depends on the machine, some machines allow you to set the date, others don't and the ticket is automatically dated. Check on the machine before you buy. You can also buy the ticket at the counter and ask, but then you have to pay 29 Euro. 3. If you travel on two days, you need two tickets. 4. This is possible, but won't give you much time in Füssen. Remember that you can only start your journey after 9 am (9:51 train)and have to be in Salzburg before 3 am. The last train leaves Munich at 22:46pm. 5. This makes no sense, as you'd have to go back to Munich to get to Innsbruck. Remember to write down your names on the ticket.

In addition to question 5:
You can travel from Füssen to Salzburg via Innsbruck - but not on a Bavaria ticket as most of the route is in Austria. You can take a bus from Füssen to Reutte in Tirol, then either another bus or the train to Innsbruck, and there is also a train connection from Innsbruck to Salzburg. However, I do not think it is any faster than to travel back from Füssen to Munich and from there to Salzburg. It would only make sense if you want to visit Innsbruck, or just see a different landscape.

Angel, Salzburg is considered both an Austrian, and German station. Your Bavaria Ticket is valid to Salzburg. The specific web page for the Laender Tickets, ( including the Bavaria Ticket) is: www.bahn.de/international/view/en/prices/germany/l

If you wish to travel via Innsbruck and you're a group, consider austrian Einfach Raus Ticket (Simply Out Ticket). I think it costs 28 euro and works same way as Bavaria Ticket (only regional trains etc.)

The regional trains are rarely full so you would have to be unlucky not to find a seat, on the day you wish to travel just rock up at the station, you will see ticket machines in the station, possibly on the platforms and you can select language then follow the prompts. You can also buy the Bavaria ticket from the ticket counter if you want but it will cost a bit more.
With storing luggage, have some coins ready and be early as the lockers fill up quickly. There may be a luggage room there but I don,t know, I,ve never used that. Rules for Bavaria ticket: Regional trains including suburban trains and trams (s-bahn and u-bahn) after 9a.m. on a week day until 0300 the following day, any time on weekends i.e. not valid on IC or Ec trains within Bavaria as far as Salzburg The ticket for 1 person is about E19 and for up to 5 people E27 or thereabouts. I would not visit Fuessen and Salzburg in 1 day, it would be awfully rushed and the Castles warrant a full day on their own, even if you only go to Neuschwanstein. The trip from Munich to Salzburg takes 1 1/2 hours.

I have a question about this as well, as we'll be traveling to Salzburg on the Bavarian Ticket. When you buy the ticket, is it just a generic pass, or do you actually put in the city you're going to, choose the time, etc? If it's just a pass, do you just hop on a train (not IC or EC) and they validate it?

The only thing you have to write on the ticket are your names. If the ticket is dated when you buy it, you don't have to validate it, if it's not, you have to get it stamped. This depends on the kind of machine where you buy it. Or go to the counter to buy it and ask.

Thank you soo much for all the replies. It's very helpful, and we have decided to skip Innsbruck, and may split castle and Salzburg to 2 days.
