Korat is only about 2 hours from Bangkok. You could take the bus, then fly to Chiangmai.

Thanks for that, it was the route I was planning to take. I was just wondering if there was a train / bus rote that would allow me to see a bit of the countryside. Thanks

Buses from Korat to Bkk take 3 hours. I used to travel from Korat to Chiang Mai or Chiang rai by bus. There's buses go directly from Korat to those northern provinces but the buses ride during the night so you can't see any view during the trip. it takes around 8-9 hours trip. You can take bus or train back to Bkk and then many choices from Bkk to Chiang Mai, fly, train, bus etc.
Have a nice trip!
