I have been to the DR almost a dozen times..but I don't stay in the compounds....a lot of crap/rumors is spread in areas such as yours...to keep your tourist dollars inside the complex...and to use their approved tours...as you'd pay less outside the complex!
The fears are all greed motivated scare tactics used by staff on their guests...I live in Los Charimcos when there...and that makes me either nuts or very lucky..cause I am one, of only a few gringos to live in this !00% Dominican area... and have had no problems what so ever!
I also only pay $8 a night for a clean room in a family run place...5 min walk to a mile of beach!
Go in peace...see the country!
here is what is outside of your complex, [photo tour]:

thank you very much for your reply even though i hope our honeymoon wont be CRAP! we are not to worried about going out of the complex as we are very ega to see lots of the real country.i am up on the reps scam that go abroad and will only be going on tours by the locals who better to tell you about the country they live in and am sure that they can show you more sites than the reps even now about.anyway thanks again dawn

Starting on the last Sunday of January and increasing in frequency and intensity as the 27th of February approaches, for Carnaval is not only a pre-Lenten festival here, it's also a celebration of Dominican independence. And at the end of August/early September, we celebrate the Merengue Festival across the island. There are also nationwide celebrations of Corpus Christi and Semana Santa (Easter Week), not to mention that each of the cities and towns has its own patron saint, who is honored with lively fiestas patronales. All of these fiestas incorporate song and dance along with other traditional rituals. One of the most popular is the feast of St. John the Baptist on June 24…. There's always something to celebrate here in the Dominican Republic!
