| New York City | Rockerfeller Center Posted: Sat July 19, 2008 09:55 AM UTC
Someone gave me a tip that the view of the NYC skyline is superb from the top if the Rockerfeller Center.. and you get the NYC skyline with th Empire State Building in it, and less queues to go up..... BUT where do you go at the Rockerfeller Center - is it clearly indicated, and whatis the terrasse up there like ? And best time of day to do this ? Thanks !

Visited a couple of weeks ago in the morning. Greta views of the city.
No queues and not crowded on the decks. The entrance to 'Top of the Rock' is at W 50th St., between 5th and 6th Avenue. See for further information: http://www.topoftherocknyc.com/visitor/Default.aspx

Sometimes there are discount coupons available. Before you go up to the TOTR, walk to the front of the RCA Bldg. (30 Rockefeller Plaza) to see if anyone is handing them out.
The best views are daytime, so you can see the expanse of Central Park. I'd go 30-40 minutes before sunset, so you can see the daytime view and then watch as the lights come up around the city.

The best view of Manhattan skyline ? I have not tried all possible angles, but the one I enjoyed most was from West New York (in NJ) across the river, especially at night on a clear day.
Alternately, you can go to a high-rise in Jersey City (NJ) or some sections of Queens, NY

why not take the Roosevelt Island tram? go to www.roosevelt-island.ny.us. Runs from 6am to 2"30am (330 am on weekends). The city really never sleeps. Take it from 2d Ave @ 59 St. costs 2, takes 4 to 5 minutes, but you get breathtaking views of the east side uptown skyline. Then you get another view on the return trip to Manhattan. Bring your camera!

The answer we received when trying to figure out exactly which door to go in was, "the one with the red carpet on the sidewalk".
There are three levels. The elevator takes you to the lowest one. It is all enclosed. You walk around to take the escalator to the next level, which is open but surrounded by plexiglass. Keep looking and you will find the stairs to the small top level with open unrestricted views.
