hi-
Anyone have any recommendations for good books to read before I travel to Argentina, Uruguay, and Brazil... interested mainly in fiction, but also history, essays, etc. I usually get a better feel for a place after I've read some fiction written about it. Also trying to find a good travel guide... not sure I like the lonely planet or rough guides. i know that might be blasphemy, but they all kind of put me to sleep. any ideas for alternative travel guides? thanks x 1000000 |

You'll learn a lot about Bahia and its people reading some of the works of Brazil's most famous author Jorge Amado: Dona Flor and Her Two Husbands; Cacau; Captains of the Sands; Gabriela, Clove and Cinnamon, to name but a few.
A leading Brazilian novelist of Amazon themes. Milton Hatoum - I very much enjoyed The Brothers. There are also great films about Brazil that I recommend: Bye Bye Brazil, Tieta of Agreste, House of Sand, Central Station, City of God and many more.

For Argentina you might pick up any writings of Jorge Luis Borges, the world famous Argentine writer who captured the spirit of the Argentine psyche. The Buenos Aires Quintet by Manuel Vazquez Montalban is a good read too. As for travel guides I would recommend you look at the Buenos Aires city tourism web site
www.bue.gov.ar and the Argentina tourism web site http://www.turismo.gov.ar/ and this one is also good http://www.welcomeargentina.com/index_i.html I find the online guides much better since the published ones are out of date by the time they hit the book stores. You might pick up the DVD of Assassination Tango, a pretty decent film set in Argentina. And a very good Brazilian movie City Of Men would be worth picking up. Hope this helps a bit suerte SAM
