langkawi have a lot of cheap accomodation. some of them not listed any of website because belong to local people.
I already experience it. It clean and cheap. Helang hotel also cheap. but i never stay there. Year 2004 i stay at Berjaya Langkawi, the package RM600, 4 days 3 night, free breakfast plus 1 dinner. it chalet. very comfortable and privacy. but far away from KUAH town. i rent a car there, it cost me RM 80 / day.

I've been to Langkawi a couple of times and really enjoyed it. First time was in November and the weather was brilliant. For hotels I've used asiarooms.com and marimari.com. I suggest you hire a car, haggle with the price and you'll get a good deal.
Enjoy Malaysia - I did!!

The weather October can be very changeable on Langkawi. My favorite resort hotel is the Pelangi Beach. I agree that a car rental is a good way to get around on Langkawi. For best rates i use www.asiaoz.com or www.nongasia.com who I use regular for Malaysia hotels. Do not expect much in the way of Duty Free shopping in Kuah, not much at all.
The island is quite but very pleasant, driving around the island is a good way to see at it's best.
