Santorini Island Travel Forum

My flight out of Santorini leaves around 22:30, and according to weather.com, the sun sets around 20:30 around the end of July. I have a couple of questions on how to best see the infamous Santorini sunset:
1. Is the sunset from Fira as nice as the one in Oia? If so, do I have enough time to see the sunset from Fira, take the bus to the airport, go through security, get to my flight ? I guess I was wondering how busy the airport is, if traffic's a problem (it's a Sun. night), etc.
2. If I opt to go to Oia,
3. How's the sunset from Kamari?

Yes, the sunset from Fira is very nice but it's possible that your vantage point won't allow you to see the sun actually move down below the horizon.

Don't rely on the bus to get you to the airport, plan on taking a taxi instead. The bus to the airport is not very frequent. Traffic will be heavy.

Don't attempt to watch the sunset in Oia and then go to the airport you might not have enough time.

The sun is not positioned so you can see it at sunset from Kamari. Kamari faces east, not west.

The airport will be very busy in July.

You don't have time to see the sunset and get to the airport, taxis will be busy then, it's a touristy island. Bare in mind every Greek island claims the 'best' sunset in the world.

actually, I did like more the sunsets in Fira than in Oia. From Fira you see Oia, Thirassia... etc while from Oia it was nice, but as said above not so different from any other island (just more crowded)

I prefer a Fira sunset to the one in Oia. In Fira, we found a place where we were by ourselves, and that was a truly amazing and intimate experience of connecting with nature. I found Oia to be away too artificial and touristy. in Oia, I felt like I was a part of a circus show or a semi-annual sale, with herds of people running into a village (and that was end of September which is off the peak season) to see a sunset, occupying all possible spots, and trying to get in front of each other to get "a perfect picture." but the most ridiculous, from my perspective, was when people started to clap after the sun has sank into the sea. But that’s just perspective of a person who likes sharing sunsets with someone special rather than a group :)
