| South America | Comments on a South America tour Itinerary Posted: Fri July 18, 2008 03:21 PM UTC
Hi,
--------------------------------------------------------------- QUESTION 1 --------------------------------------------------------------- I'd like to understand if the following 20-day itinerary to Peru and Chile looks good. Saturday, December 20, 2008: Los Angeles, USA to Lima, Peru AGENDA AT PERU - 5 days @ Machu Picchu - 3-4 days at Iquitos in Amazon basin - 1-2 days at Lima Wednesday, December 31, 2008: Lima, Peru to Santiago, Chile - 1-2 days around Santiago - 5 days at Punta Arenas - 2-3 days in Southern Argentina (just drive across the Chile/Argentina to visit glaciers and some small towns) Saturday, January 10, 2009: Punta Arenas/Santiago, Chile to Los Angeles, USA --------------------------------------------------------------- QUESTION 2 --------------------------------------------------------------- What backpacking based reservations (hostels) need to be taken care of for the above itinerary? - Guides/porters at Machu Picchu - Amazon tours - Chile non-guided tours (We'll be living in Refugios and carrying all our stuff) --------------------------------------------------------------- |

About your 5 days stay at Punta Arenas:
I Think Punta Arenas is more a transport hub. The town itself has not too much too offer (perhaps visit one of the penguin colonies). I would recommend travelling - by bus - to Puerto Natales/Torres del Paine. especially the scenery in the national park is breathtaking. Visit to Argentina: There is just one town: El Calafate, which is the gateway to the glaciers. Travel from Puerto Natales by bus, takes about 4 or 5 hours, depending on the border crossing. happy travels Jaap

OK, I do understand.
A recommendation for a hostel in El Calafate: America del Sur Hostel (http://members.virtualtourist.com/vt/tfr/1/1781e7/3/17f527/) Be aware El calafate is much more expensive than other parts of Argentina. I think you will have to make reservation in advance for that time of the year !! Jaap

Re: guides and porters in MP, they come with the package provided by your trekking agency. Please see my general Peru pages for additional tips on Inca Trail permit availability, trekking agency, walking poles, etc. If you're doing an independent sightseeing of Machu Picchu vs. a trekking adventure via the Inca Trail en route to Machu Picchu, please check my "general tip" in my MP/Aguas Calientes page for more info on this topic.
Goodluck & enjoy your SA adventure!
