Re: Transport from Carcassone to Tossa de Mar Posted: Fri July 18, 2008 11:43 PM UTC
You can get quite close as there are direct trains from Narbonne to Barcelona through Girona. I did the journey to Barcelona myself last month. I can't help with the Spanish end though.
There are two daily trains from Narbonne to Girona and Barcelona leaving at 0822 (arrive Girona at 1040) and 1757 (arriving 2019)
There are trains from Carcassonne to Narbonne of course and you can view the timetables at http://www.ter-sncf.com/languedoc/index.asp
The Narbonne - Girona direct trains require reservations - the morning train I took was full certainly.
In theory you can book on line through www.voyages-sncf.com or maybe raileurope.com but I have never tried - I just went to the station a few days before and got myself a ticket. I imagine the trains might be busier in August.
In theory you can take a local French train from Narbonne across the border to Port Bou then a local Spanish train from there to Girona. I did this once in the reverse direction and as both sets of local trains are very few and far between and do not connect one with the other, you might end up with a 1hr 45 minute wait at the rather depressing border station, as I did. Cheap though!
For a low cost option but rather messier, you might want to look at www.frogbus.com who have started a direct bus service from Perpignan to Girona Airport. This runs several times a day and is a lot cheaper than the train. However there is a lot of messing about eg Carcassonne - Perpignan by train and then assorted buses at the other end.
Hope that helps.
