Isla de Tenerife tips?
Posted: Fri July 18, 2008 08:47 AM UTC
Hi,

I'm going to tenerife and la palma in the beginnening of september. We will rent a rural house on both islands and rent a car. Can anyone give some 'must see's and do's. It can be everything 'a market, a walk, a nice place for a sunset...' As long as there isn't involved mass tourism. Because we want to escape that.

Can anyone recomend a region to stay? again we prefer a very quiet and green environment as far as possible from the very touristic places.

Has anyone ever taken the ferry from Tenerife to La Palma? Is there one daily?
and going to visit la gomera for one day without a car.. is that any good?

Lot's of questions! Hope someone feels like answering them.

many greetings, I stay looking forward to our trip..

It can be done! -at least you can find a house away from the over developed southern coast
We rented a lovely apartment in the foothills of Mount Teide (a must see - not just the volcanic peak but all the amazing countryside around)..

Here is are links to properties with a rural location:-

Other famous sights - but they do tend to attract a lot of visitors - are Los Gigantes, Garachico, Masca, - if you like twisty mountain roads. Orotava and La Laguna.
In the north in particular look out for the typical Canarian architecture with lovely wooden balconies.
Tenerife is famous for its flowers, many growing wild in the hillsides, but there are many lovely parks in the island. Santa Cruz de Tenerife is an elegant old town with some remarkable new architecture, including the new Opera House and Concert Hall.
You are welcome to look at my Tenerife Pages but one of your compatriots is the real Tenerife specialist - a botanist who has spent years working on the island. I will try to remember his name and get back to you!

I can only give you some tips for La Palma, since I've not been to Tenerife (yet).

La Palma certainly is not about mass-tourism. I have some tips for nice walks and sunset here: http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/6117e/40867/4/ and we stayed in a very small but quiet appartment about 1 km from Los Llanos (http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/tp/1bbd50/. That is a central place from which the island could be explored easily (we had a car).

The island has a dryer (west) and a more rainy, greener, side (east), also see http://forum.virtualtourist.com/discussion-388682-1-1-Travel-0-0-Isla_de_La_Palma-discussion.html

Enjoy, Dennis
