| Chiang Mai | Monks and their morning alms Posted: Fri July 18, 2008 08:02 AM UTC
We will soon be making our 7th visit to Thailand, and the one thing we have not seen is the Monks going round in the morning getting their Alms. While in Chiang Mai we would like to do this. Can anyone help me with where would be the best place to see this, and what time in the morning is best. We will be staying at the Chiang Mai Plaza hotel.
Your help and advise is appreciated. |

Dawn on any street. You will see the monks then.

If you want to see them on mass the go to the foot of doi Suthep and watch them come down in early morning.
the best thing is not to see this but to participate in it. Make an offering the best time is about 5:30- 6:30 am depending on season. As they will start at first light which is really before the sun raises at all. It is easy just walk out the Plaza hotel and turn right and at the river right of the chedi hotel is a good size temple and you can stand near it on the road that runs along the river and they will walk by. You should remove your shoes and wai as they arrive. Do not speak and place the food in the bowl do not touch the bowl or the monk. The city is its stupidity and crassness wants westerners to make offering at the Sompet market so there it is set up with prepackage monk food vendors and is easy but tacky with monks standing by the stalls just waiting to cash in...
