Yellowstone National Park Yellowstone Trip is Sept. 23- Sept. 30. Needing a little help with last 2 nights.
Posted: Fri July 18, 2008 06:13 AM UTC
My Husband and I (from Texas) are flying into Jackson around noon on the 23rd. Picking up our car and heading north through the Grand Teton National Park to Yellowstone. We are booked in the Old Faithful Lodge Cabins (frontier) for 5 nights. At first I had planned to go back to the Grand Tetons and spend the next 2 nights, 28th & 29th at Jackson Lake Lodge but then someone mentioned to my husband a fantastic museum in Cody (winchesters). Now I'm thinking we could go to Cody for a night and then to Jackson for the last night. Has anyone driven from Cody to Jackson?
Best route? Prettiest route? How Long? ANY suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks

Sorry- I haven't driven to Jackson from Cody, but I recently spent time in all the places you mention. The Buffalo Bill Cody Museum in Cody is absolutely fantastic on so many levels. There are 5 museums in one, and they are probably refering to the firearms museum. All are great.
There are many things to enjoy in Cody- a nice downtown shopping/dining area, a short drive out to Heart Mountain relocation center, the new 25 5x5 fiberglass bears that will be placed as public art, the bronze sculptures throughout the area, The Hotel Irma (supposedly haunted, as well as a retail establishment that is also haunted), the nightly rodeo, some good restaurants (but not the Italian place),the trail town with it's old cabins and buildings-
I think it would be well worth your money and time to spend at least a day, and hopefully more in Cody.

Just a thought... maybe move your last night( night 5) to Yellowstone Lake Hotel, very
pretty! In my opinion 5 nights at OF Lodge is a lot. Very busy, crowded touristy. Yellowstone Lake Hotel is luxurious, lovely, peaceful...takes you back in time and puts you much closer to Cody. You can take in the wildlife in the Valley just north of the Lake. (tons of Bison!) the Hotel is located near Fishing Bridge and the East Entrance. There was a rock slide at the East Entrance when we were there... no one could get in or out for a night!

Just a thought, we loved Yellowstone, hope you do too!

The Buffalo Bill Historical Center is really a not to be missed place. It covers five topics, and is often called five museums under one roof. This is truly an outstanding museum, which has recently become affiliated with the famous Smithsonian Museums in Washington D.C. Under this partnership BBHC Cody museum and the Smithsonian will share artifacts and artworks. the museum has the gun section that you mentioned, an outstanding Plains Indian section, Natural History, art (paintings and sculptures), and a Buffalo Bill Cody section. I have written a detailed explaination of what to expect in each of these wings, with a number of photos, plus a travelogue on the museum on my Cody page.

And you can thank traveltimeo8 for his comment about the Italian Place in Cody. It is truly an awful restaurant that has been in business for a number of years now, and I can't figure out why. (maybe I should put it on my Cody page under warnings--don't eat here.....)

I have not driven from Cody to Jackson in many years, so I can't be of much help, but if Yellowstone is open we always go through Yellowstone to get there, and with tourist traffic time can vary. My memory may be way off, but I think it was about 6 hours last time we did this.

I suppose you already have your plane tickets set, but if not, and you can afford to spend more, I would recommend going from Yellowstone to Cody, and flying out of its small airport. These smaller planes connect with either Denver or Salt Lake City, where you could then get a plane back to Texas.
