| Washington D.C. | Travelling to and around DC with a 7 month old baby Posted: Fri July 18, 2008 12:03 AM UTC
Hi there,
I will be travelling to IAD from London in August with my 7 month old. My husband is meeting us in DC. So I have to do the journey from IAD to Georgetown, where our hotel is, on my own with the baby. Can anyone recommend the best way to do this? Taxi? I'm just wondering if taxis have car seats as a standard or if I should call in advance. Also if anyone can recommend good parents rooms downtown. Once we get to the city, we're planning to do most things with the baby in a sling so getting around on public transport should be OK. But she'll still need feeding and changing from time to time. Any advice would be very much appreciated - I just called the hotel and they really had no idea how I should get there from the airport. Thanks again! |

Unfortunately there is no "good" way to get to Georgetown from Dulles Airport. That's why the hotel had no answer for you. The cheapest way would be via a combination of bus and metro, but the most convenient (and most expensive) would be a taxi and it will cost you about $60US. Sorry I can't help you with parent's rooms, however, many dining establishments have changing facilities in the restrooms. The Smithsonian complex is well equipped with these. Here are some transportation links to help you:

You can also use super shuttle which is a shared-taxi service from airport to your door - approx fare is US $27.00 for 1st passenger and the baby rides free ! If you dont mind some minor delays, I think you will do fine.

Most people seem to travel with their own combination car seat/detachable carrier. Most public transport does not provide car seats, baby strollers, etc. allthough some museums, etc. may rent push strollers, etc. Good luck

There are a lot of really nice hotels with reasonable rates near Dulles that provide free shuttles. You might consider going to one of them to relax and have your husband meet you there. You could continue into DC more easily. He can get to the airport on the 5A bus from Rosslyn or L'Enfant Plaza for $3 and take the hotel shuttle to meet you.
