There are a few interesting sites pretty close to the airport; the Arad Fort and Siyadi & Sheikh Isa houses are in Muharraq (island where the airport is). There is also the excellent Bahrain Museum just across the causeway on the main island. I'm not sure how much taxi would be though as we had a hire car.

First of all the Airport is located on a different Island to the north of Manama called Muharraq. There is plenty of traffic during rush our between the two island. I will advice against venturing away from the Airport into Manama Island given the limited time you have although the entire country is small but you don't want to take risk.
Just past the main bridge between the 2 Island there is the Bahrain Museum and Bait Al-Quran near to each other. I think there is a fort or two in Muharraq that you can visit
