| Melbourne | Bikes on Trains Posted: Thu July 17, 2008 12:10 PM UTC
Hi Folks,
I will be spending 3 weeks in Melboune during August for work, I was thinking of taking my bike (pedal power). My question is due to the limited free time I was thinking if I could catch a train to Frankston from the City and ride back, same to Geelong or other places of interest, can I take my bike on the train ?? Yes you can take your bike on the train. It was no during peak hour but this rule was changed, even so peak hour to the city in the morning and away from it at night will be very crowded.
Geelong would be too far to ride back in one day. The site below will give you some ideas http://www.bv.com.au/

there are specific compartments that have a place where you can keep your bikes on trains. Many people bring their bicycles on the trains here.

Hi You can take your bike on the train
Go to this web page to find the distances you have to ride, and likely times. Also take some wet weather gear with you. www.whereis.com.au Good Luck, Mike

The road from Geelong to Melbourne is very busy, i don,t know if bikes would even be allowed as it is a sort of freeway (motorway). It takes 1 1/2 hours in the car so it is a long way.

Frankston no problem and its relatively flat so good for cycling. Big problem for Geelong as from memory you are no allowed to ride on the freeway to Geelong. YOu can take the bike on the train but they may make you pay!!!

I'm not sure about Geelong but I know you can take your bike on the train from Frankston. However, I wasn't aware the rule changed that you can take your bike on at peak hour so check out www.connexmelbourne.com.au. If you ride the train and make it to your destination before 7am the train ride is free (and you can take your bike on at that time too).
The ride back to Frankston is a popular ride but it is a little dangerous. But if you like an adrenaline rush, then go for it!! Hope this helps!
